A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    1981 GS450E Rear Fender Assembly

Bought this off of EBay a few years back for a project that never happened. "Free" if buyer pays shipping, or I'm in Minneapolis MN if someone happens to be nearby and can use it.

Sorry for the stupid question... what is this? Can't find in my manual.

For what it's worth, my 1981 450e is two bolt and has the spring to the right. I suppose the previous owner could have installed it upside down at some point...

    GS450 Starter Replacement

Just to close out the thread: I followed pete's advice and jb-welded my two loose magnets back into place. One was pretty much intact and the other was split into two pretty beat up pieces. I put it back together and threw it in the bike, and it actually seems to be cranking pretty well. So...

    GS450 Starter Replacement

Hi Steve, I assume we are talking about the bolts that mount the starter into the case? I've attached some photos of that area, as I'm not entirely sure what you mean about a slight curve. If you've got a usable starter you are willing to sell, I'm certainly interested!

    GS450 Starter Replacement

You're right, Stocker does look like a great option. Unfortunately, they are out of stock on that starter. I'll give them a call and see if they plan to have any available any time soon. Otherwise it looks like I can get the rebuild kit from them for $30. Hopefully that plus gluing the...

    GS450 Starter Replacement

I hadn't considered JB Weld-ing them back into place. I suppose i have nothing to lose from trying. Thanks for the advice!

    GS450 Starter Replacement

I was experiencing intermittent weak starting, and after checking the usual suspects, pulled the starter to find that 2 of the 4 magnets had come loose from the housing, and one was shattered into several pieces. I'm surprised it continued to spin at all... Anyway, I'm in the market for a...

Yes, of course! Us small-displacement GS'ers gotta stick together.

1980 GSX400 clutch pushrod oil seal question...

This is the stuff I used on my seal to compensate for some scratches I put in the case during removal: https://www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/gasket-sealants/permatex-form-a-gasket-no-2-sealant/ I haven't had any leaks in the several hundred miles since the repair. You probably came...

Yeah, it was an amazing one for sure. It makes you feel very small and very appreciative of shelter.

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

I did a 112 mile loop out of Minneapolis, east across the river to Wisconsin yesterday morning on my little GS450. After two seasons of work, this bike is really starting to come together. Runs great, no more oil leaks, decent handling with renewed suspension and brakes... That darkness off...

    83 GS450 stuck clutch?

Yep, that is normal. In fact, I just walked out to my '81 450E and tried it. When the transmission isn't spinning, I can shift through 1, 2, 3, but no higher. The clutch isn't really tied to the way the transmission shifts, it just decouples the engine and the transmission so they can spin /...

    83 GS450 stuck clutch?

You say "non-running GS450". Maybe a stupid question, but are you trying to shift through all of the gears without the bike running/moving? If so, only being able to select a limited range is normal.

    450 clutch pushrod seal flanged?

Thanks John. When I was a kid learning how to wrench on things, my dad put a lot of emphasis on patience - slow down, think through it, don't make it worse. I try to keep that in mind when doing stuff like this. It's easy to get frustrated and make things much worse very quickly! I think...
