A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

Just a quick update. I tried to replace the O-ring with the 16.6mm ID one that I bought, but it is too big. I can't push the seal back into the valve body. I may order a pack of 16.3mm ones and see if that's better, but I am really starting to think my leak is the custom seal around the plunger...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

These should totally be serviceable. They fail, and understandably so. There are two weep holes, one on each half of the device. The upper hole is for the part actuated by brake pressure, so brake fluid would come out of that hole. The lower hole is on the the actual valve body working on the...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

Yeah given how that area of the fork has been wet basically the entire year I've had the bike and there's still paint on it, I decided it's not brake fluid. And since it's probably not leaking from the new O-rings, I have to assume it's coming from the weep hole that generally indicates an...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

Interlude: More Leaks I am amassing quite a collection of O-rings. So despite fixing the leaky oil hose, I was still getting a small pool of engine oil buildup on top of the crankcase. At first I thought it must be the other oil hose, but after degreasing everything and taking a quick test...

    Happy Gilmore 2

I am someone who feels that emotion all too frequently. Like seriously, I've got issues. But I can't say this movie triggered it in me. I can see how though. A lot of the callbacks to the original movie all but emphasized the passage of time. I may have even felt a twinge when old man Shooter...

GS550 with Mikuni Dual Throat Carb, No Info

I just went through and cleaned my BSW30SS carbs on my '83 GS550E, and I can confirm: There is not much info out there on these! The outer jets are bigger than the inner jets, 102.5 and 95 stock, respectively (for the E, other models may vary). That fitting is indeed for the petcock vacuum...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

I had already put the carbs back in, but you're probably right, those O-rings are likely older than me and quite dead. I'll have to get them next time. The valves were mostly in spec, but I did adjust 5 or 6 by the slightest bit. The cover O-rings and gasket were also in great shape, so I'm...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

What ever did we do before the Dremel? I actually wore my eye protection this time, thank goodness. I cut just above the highest crimp, and I think I nailed it. It leaves a little recess to snug the new hose up into which makes it look pretty nice and clean. This sure as hell looks like a...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

So I ended up just hand cleaning the carbs and parts since they really weren't that dirty. Not that I've rebuilt many carbs in my life (or any, really), but I found it a bit surprising how clean they were compared to how brittle those needle valve O-rings were. Anyway, I took my time and got it...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

I was quite surprised, but I actually found one Japanese site that allegedly still has one for sale! https://yumbo-jp.com/en/catalog/motorcycle/suzuki/gs550/20651-gs550l-1983/792339-signal-generator.html I saw somewhere else that seems to make a modernized version too, but it was still like $400...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

Episode 2: Carbs It is time. This happened a couple times last year, but I thought it was just some old fuel lines leaking between the tank and the carbs. It's gotten worse lately, bad enough that I really should stop putting it off and finally service the carbs. It seems to be more of a...

    '83 550: Leaking Fuel, Can't Idle

OK, so it sounds like the consensus is that this actually could be a carb problem, causing gas to flood out from them at idle but run fine under throttle? I suppose that does make more sense intuitively than an external leak starving the carbs of gas which might imply the reverse: they'd idle...

    '83 550: Leaking Fuel, Can't Idle

I don't see anything there related to my question. Perhaps you should ad it. ;)

    '83 550: Leaking Fuel, Can't Idle

This happens from time to time, meaning maybe 10% of the trips I take. I thought it was one of the connections between the tank and the carbs, but refreshing those doesn't seem to have done it. I can't figure out where the leak is coming from, but I'm starting to wonder if it's actually from...

    1983 GS550E: The Scenic Route

Well, it's been a long winter, though apparently not long enough since I was barely able to make time for this bike. Kids...whoa! I am marking this project complete, however. I tidied up the wiring, settled on an attachment method for the igniter, and decided to just tuck away the old unused...
