A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Engine over heating

You should really get a infrared temp gun that way you can measure how hot and know what progress you make. After a good highway ride my air-cooled bikes are around 300 degree F at the cooling fins, that is hot, but not overheating. A quick sanity check I use for oil flow is to check the oil...

    Weeping oil from cam rubbers

I have been very happy with the permatex grey (high torque) rtv for the plugs, no more weeping, even with old plugs. Also doesn't stick out as bad against natural aluminum.

Where to Get Touch Up Paint for 550ES?

In Duplicolor, try BGM0438 Medium Quasar Metallic (80 WA9544). It is not perfect, but it was fairly close for my 85 GS550E.

    Gas cap removal without key

I have taken a few caps off that were locked and I did not have the key, When I do it, I always destroy the lock, but the tank does not get damaged. First I find a craftsman flat head screw driver that will get into the key slot fairly well, then I put a wrench on the handle and give it a hard...

1983 GS450GA (Suzukimatic) Carb Strip and Ball Bearing WTF?

I am guessing that this carb has an accelerator pump and that ball is to prevent the diaphragm from sucking in air after squirting fuel into the venturi.

    Use of plugs on tires

I will second that the sticky strings are difficult to remove. I had patched one of my bias ply motorcycle tires with one, when I replaced the tire, I decided to grab the loop of the string from the inside with a pair of pliers and give it a hard yank. The tire started to fold itself inside out...

1983 GS550ES Side Stand Light On When Stand Is Up

If all these strange symptoms started at the same time I'd start looking for physical damage to the loom, like Rich stated, up by where the harness enters the gauge cluster, it rubs there when the steering is moved side to side. Like Redman stated you will need a meter, or a test light to start...

    Best tires for a GS550es from 1984

Yes, the sport demon is a great tire for this bike except as mentioned about the short life. The Bridgestone battlax bt45 is a great choice too with a longer life. I've used both on my 550e and like them.

    Barn find 1980 GS450L!

Check out this thread from another member here. Similar issue with oil loss. Hopefully your engine did not have a total loss. https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?260225-GS450-Surreptitious-Engine-Reassembly

    GS450 Surreptitious Engine Reassembly

Good on you for diving into the engine tear down. Like Ed said, the manual is out there, do you have it? The bottom end, from what what I can tell so far doesn't look like a motor that had locked up. If you do not have these things yet, I would get them soon, even the Harbor Freight stuff is...

Whats the deal with the 16 valve engines?

The only issue I know about on a stock setup is the valve cover bolts easily strip out the threads in the cam bearing cap and require a thread insert for repair. I have seen people alter the upper end oil supply, but these were always modded motors. I think there is plenty more to worry about on...

    82 GS300L - Right-Side Drop Outs, Bogs, Stalls

I'm guessing to use the gn250 box you will need two, one for each coil as the gn250 is a single cylinder. Take a look at the gs500e from say 1993, it's a 7 pin and the 500 is a parallel twin like your 300. Except your 300 is a higher revving 4 valve per pot, the advance curve may be different...

    82 GS300L - Right-Side Drop Outs, Bogs, Stalls

I wonder if the gs500 like the early 90s one might work too. It looks close and they made zillions of those things.

    82 GS300L - Right-Side Drop Outs, Bogs, Stalls

The gs250 has a mechanical advance, and the gs300 has electronic advance. So no, it won't work unless you get the entire signal generator from the gs250 and who knows if the crankshaft shaft ends and covers are the same.

    82 GS300L - Right-Side Drop Outs, Bogs, Stalls

Unfortunately you've got an ignitor box that is only used on the gs300l. Makes it harder to find second hand and no longer available new. But it sounds like you have a short or broken joint in the box. People have dissolved the potting material with solvents like Xylene. It's an easy choice to...
