A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Broken battery box tab mounts

Hey folks, Been a while. Still rockin' my 450, and the other day noticed that the battery box itself was also rockin'... not in a good way. Two out of three battery box tabs have broken, and I don't really have a good way to reattach them. The tab closest to the engine is still ok. Only welder...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

I really wish I'd managed to read this before I had closed up the engine. Will do Greg, thanks. Just to be sure (because it looks like no based on memory), there's no way to check that without at least taking off the clutch side of the engine housing right?

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Haven't taken a look at the system physically. But I pondered through any recent changes I've made, and realized both transmission failures occurred after changing the clutch ramp. A bit more than a month back, my chain skipped a tooth and shredded the little actuator shaft as well as the...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Bike's been stock gearing these past few weeks. No brake issues, replaced front bearings but that's been it... until yesterday, when the transmission s#it the bed again. Accelerated away from a light, shift up to second with the clutch pulled all the way in and... CRONCH. Walk of shame on the...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Well unfortunately I'd tried fixing that issue a few different ways before discovering the spindle for the brake lever itself needed a thin oil to help make it de-assert on the rear brakes.

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Thanks for the advice GregT, but the engine's been buttoned up already.. Gentle riding, oil change after 100 miles, and everything seems ok so far. I reverted the final-drive gearing back to stock, the limited top speed is annoying but it'll have to do till I get the GS1000 online. Happy 4th...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Culprit's found. I'll be installing the replacement gears later this weekend, but I'm also going to try to do a post-mortem on which circlip actually came off (looks like 4 total in the fiche), and see if one of my hunches on what actually happened is a winner. I'll keep you all posted, have a...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Welp.. replacement set of gears on the way via ebay. I wish there was a way to know with better certainty that it was the clip, but it kind of makes sense. The clip may have finally worked loose right at that stoplight, that difficulty in rolling was the first time it was interacting with...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Grimly, distrusted because if this had happened 5 minutes earlier, that'd be skating along the highway on my ass. Most I'm hoping for is a track bike out of this, replacement set of gears on ebay is $40. But you gotta agree, a failure leading to locked rear wheels is quite a bad thing. What...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Hey all. Pretty sad, my GS450 that I've put a lot of work into has failed in a pretty serious way that's made me lose all trust in her. The other day, I was zipping along the highway at about 75 to 80, no apparent issues. I took the exit, stopped at the light. Light turns green, I accelerate...

    1981 GS G Cafe Build

Kenneth_G_Rogers this is a really nice build so far. More as a general Q: How much do mono-shocks improve...handling? Traction, hitting dips and bumps etc for daily commuters? I'm working on a GS1000 right now, it's still in the planning stages so... just wondering. Sorry to distract on your...

    Seems like engine knock?

Gorminride, would you say the brass shims helped? My engine rarely slips into this knock mode, unless I've been hauling ass on one of the local highways, which is more often than not. I generally slow down a mile or two out from my destination to let the engine cool; my point in mentioning this...

Helicoil for oil drain bolt on a 1983 GS450E?

Having had to do this job myself, may I strongly suggest removing the oil pan and being very careful to ensure that the resulting thread is fully perpendicular to the pan surface. I mistakenly had the angle slightly off and wound up having to machine out the crap threads, and insert an...insert...

    Seems like engine knock?

It sounds a little bit like, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kGxLMDATu0 but more consistent. Additionally, I notice the bike generally has trouble idling. The choke helps somewhat, but only marginally. Carbs cleaned ultrasonically, then backwards air pressure was applied. This is after all jets...

    Seems like engine knock?

Hey everyone, kind of a perplexing issue. I know about the dreaded "cam walk", with a fix detailed on bwringer's site, but... For some reason, the last few weeks when I'm getting off the highway (and the engine's good and warm) there's a consistent knocking sound. I think it might be there above...
