A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

To Seafoam or not to Seafoam

I like Seafoam. For stubborn issues I'll even dip into the B12 Chemtool. I was just writing about this elsewhere, but I have exactly the problem you're describing pop up a couple times a year on one or another of my bikes and I find that if I catch it early I can fix it by just driving around...

what fails next, after the fuse?

I kicked it and kicked it and then bumped it and bumped it. I spent probably half an hour running around the school parking lot next to my house. It's 75 degrees F here at 3am and that's all I could muster. I am in: central Texas. I am not in: shape. Anyway, I got it running for a couple of...

what fails next, after the fuse?

Who Dat? I'll try to answer your questions. No promise on lowering any flags. Sorry, I tried to quote, but it won't let me quote your quotes. You're going to have to trust I'm responding to your questions in order. I will jump on a new R/R, it seems like that's a good general measure...

what fails next, after the fuse?

unfocused: Thank you. Helps a lot, I think. I haven't gotten in and traced the wires yet. Yesterday I did replace the fuse (I tried two new ones), and swapping in a new fuse didn't bring the lights back on, even momentarily. Presuming that I have a (not nice, but decent) DVOM, and I know some...

what fails next, after the fuse?

Spark tester indicates that I'm getting power to my plugs. Why haven't I started it yet? Is what I would be asking me, if I were you. Because it was leaking gas from the carb overflow, and as a lazy measure before I pulled/cleaned the carbs, yesterday I did the classic run it until it's warm...

what fails next, after the fuse?

The whole time I've had this bike it's blown headlamps. I assume it's because the old wiring has extra resistance and that's spiking the voltage. A couple of years ago I switched to an LED lamp, because they're already designed to shed extra voltage, and haven't had an acute issue since. I...

what fails next, after the fuse?

I am much dumber about electrical than mechanical (part of the reason I like old pre-computer vehicles), but I did just think to check continuity between the negative terminal and the frame, and that's good. So I have ground. That's something.

what fails next, after the fuse?

My 1978 GS750e was running fine a few days ago, and yesterday as well. I went to start it today, and when I hit the go-button the lights all blinked off. No problem, right? Swap the single fuse that exists and I should be good to go. I'd never done the fuse on this bike, but I found it, and the...

Thanks! Progress is one of my favorite things to make.

    spinning my cam chain tensioner

If anyone reading this in the future is jonesing for an update: I got all the pieces in and did the rebuild as specified and it seems totally fine now. Also threw an alligator clip on the oil pressure wire. Also the carbs aren't leaking.

    spinning my cam chain tensioner

Ha, yes, please. The clip that holds it in place broke about a week ago. I've been meaning to stick an alligator clip or something on the wire until I figure out a more permanent solution.

Does that mean the pushrod spring is too weak?

    spinning my cam chain tensioner

Sorry, I'm dumb, I can get a reference. My 750 is sitting two feet away from this bike. Here's that tensioner if I rev and drop it. It barely twitches. Is that what it should be doing? https://photos.app.goo.gl/B5vTQZaaTgJgUJNJ8

    spinning my cam chain tensioner

Thank you both. I pulled it off today and went through the rebuild document, though I don't have new seals or anything, so I didn't pull it totally apart. I familiarized myself with the bits and their jobs, and then reinstalled as per bwringer's instructions. I made sure I put a little extra...
