A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Homemade airbox

My bike has VM carbs. I used 50mm pod filters and made reducers from silicone hose to eliminate the shoulder that sometimes cover the air jets etc.

    Homemade airbox

Update: I remove the homemade airbox and installed pod filters. The pod filters have those dreaded shoulders. I bought silicone hose with 40mm ID and 50mm OD. I cut 15mm pieces and used them as spacers inside 50mm pod filters to bypass/remove the shoulders. Now they are straight through/no...

    Homemade airbox

Does anyone think I should set my carbs up like it is running with 4 pod filters? Just as a starting point? I am running stock jets and needle position at the moment. 1/4 throttle is fine but anything above that and the bike bogs down.

GS550 VM carb mid pilot jet size

I ran my bike with no filter. Just around the block. The bike still bogs down and plugs are black/sooty. It bogs at half throttle and up. How is this possible with stock jets and needle position. Idle to 1/4 throttle is fine. I used a color tune to tune the idle. Fuel screws are at 1/2 a...

    Homemade airbox

Hi guys I can’t seem to find an airbox for my 78 GS550 so I decided to make one. It is still raw metal. Will sand and paint later. What do you guys think? Could it be too restrictive? All the flanges are 40mm OD and 37mm ID.

GS550 VM carb mid pilot jet size

What exactly does the mid jet (50) do considering there is another pilot jet (15) just above?

GS550 VM carb mid pilot jet size

Carbs were cleaned to forum spec. Dipped, ultrasonic and new o-rings etc. Yes the pods are no-names. I will replace them with proper pods. If I were to run without pods, my bike should be really lean? Just as a test? I will report back. Thank you

GS550 VM carb mid pilot jet size

Hi guys I would like to know how important the size of the mid pilot jet (air jet) is? The thing is I cant find the correct size 50 pilot (air) jets. All I can find is 160’s. My bike has pod filters, because I cant seem to find a complete stock airbox. The weird thing is how rich the bike is...

Update: I replaced the rectifier with a new R/R unit. Charging 14.8v at 5000rpm. Is it fine if I just unplugged the headlight loop?

    1979 GS550N regulator/ rectifier or rectifier only?

Thanks for the response. I will be upgrading my reg/rec and bypassing the headlight. Do you think I got the 16v at the battery because it was basically a no-load test as described in the manual?

    1979 GS550N regulator/ rectifier or rectifier only?

Hi guys Can somebody please help me identify if this unit with part number DE3804, is a reg/rec or just a rec? I seem to be getting mixed answers online. I can not find a regulator unit on the bike. I?m thinking it is a rec only, because I tested the voltage at the battery at 5k rpm. It read...
