A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hmmm - there's something wrong with this picture... ;)

    Has anyone seen CAFEKID(Josh)?

I don't know about the IP being blocked - most people connect through an ISP - who has the 'actual' allocated IP address - and their DHCP server just dishes out new IP's as required, from a pool - which may or may not be actual IP addresses as allocated by the international organisation. Sort...

    Opening up my 83 650GL

I hate to say this Kerrfunk - but that poor bike looks like it's a dog (well, the engine at least). The sand is a REALLY bad sign - means it's prolly been ridden on the beach (any near you?) or the desert... off road... The leaking headgasket is another giveaway that it's probably been worked on...

Hone cylinders when reusing old rings?

:D I knew someone would have the answer! ;) It's been a few decades since I've had an engine that would even need something like that (my Ducati has plated bores), but I had a vague recollection of something... :-k

Hone cylinders when reusing old rings?

Sometimes a hone to clean up the 'step/lip' that forms above the top of the stroke of the top ring is needed. Though I think (I'm not sure here) there may be 'special' tools to do this? Re the carbon on the bores and pistons - CRC Gasket Stripper works wonders. Spray it on, wait a few minutes...

    Oh come on!!!!

Dropped the whole damn set of feeler gauges down the cam chain tunnel. :o At least it was relatively easy to get out. The worst I ever had - I'd been working on my engine the night before my first road race (on a road bike), and was doing the final engine button up. Got the cam cover back on...

    Best carbs for GS1000

Lol - sounds like you've got your workshop time all booked for a few more years... ;) I've still got my GSX (bought it in '83) - looking kinda sad, stuck in the back of the shed for now. One day I'll drag it out (If my new business plan works out, I'll be able to afford to), and get it back in...

    Best carbs for GS1000

I'd agree with Tarbash. My old GSX1100ET/X was tweaked a bit - Yoshi 1135, Yoshi stage II cams - which got 'updated' to an unknown brand with more lift and a LOT more duration, handmade exhaust, K&N pods, and it ran really nicely with a set of 33mm Keihin CR Specials (smoothbores). Back in the...

That's cool. Good on you! May it all go well, and run sweet when done.

    Another gearing question - rebuilt 1978 GS550

I'm with him ^^^^ I'd stay with the standard gearing too - a couple of my friends had those bikes back in their day - the gearing was never an issue. As tkent02 says - if it feels a little gutless - then maybe increase the rear sprocket by a couple of teeth. But I doubt you'll really need to do...

    DIY Chain Riveter

I usually use vice grips with a nut (like the G clamp and nut trick by rymac11 - which I like - I'll have to try it sometime!) to squash the plates together, then a big hammer behind the chain link, and a ball-peen hammer to round the top of the rivet link over. Works easier if you have a second...

How fast is is your old GS?

Heh - I've had my wife's Bandit 1200 past 240kph indicated... And my old GSX was timed at 143mph through a flying 1/4 mile. And that was with a one tooth smaller than standard front sprocket. Never got the chance to try it with the bigger front sprocket. :( At least not timed... :-\\\ ...and my...

Why does this gas look green?

Yep - a little diesel in the gas won't hurt - it's basically just a low viscosity oil - so will act like a 'top end' lube. A lot will just stop it - but not do any real damage. You'll just be faced with having to drain all the carb float bowls, and getting most of it out of the tank. Your engine...

Anybody race a GS1100E on a road course?

Yup! I know just what you mean. I had a set of those on my 1100 - for about a week. I reckoned they were called crash bars, because they were more likely to cause a crash, then to save one... :p My preference was the flat alloy plate ones (see pic), with a rubber pad between them and the...

Anybody race a GS1100E on a road course?

Sadly - that was about 23 or more years ago... :( It also required a weird style of cornering with the 18"-ers... (From the original 19" front, 17" rear) ... I'd countersteer into the turn, then as I cranked it further over, the steering would get more 'centred', then I'd be steering into the...

Anybody race a GS1100E on a road course?

I used to - many moons ago... It WAS too big and heavy for a 'street' (closed roads) course, but I still got a third. :D Only because they kicked out the two 600's that were racing out of their class, and in the F1 class... But I'll still take it! :p In those days, mine had Yoshi 1135cc pistons...

Bent Rim... Front Tire Blow Out... Crashed

Just had another thought of something to check... The exhaust header bolts! I vaguely (long time ago now) recall a similar noise from mine, and tracking it back to a leaky header. Be careful tightening the studs - if they're getting old, the damn things can 'pull out' and strip the threads in...

Bent Rim... Front Tire Blow Out... Crashed

Are you sure it's from the valve area? If you have a head gasket problem, that can give you a 'ticking' sound too, if it's leaking combustion gases...

Gallery of Injurys and X-Rays, post your own.

I feel like an amateur compared to some of you guys! :( Good grief... I've got no pics - don't like to retain those memories... But lots of bones broken - just one or two at a time. Starting age 7-8 - fractured right wrist - slipped, fell, landed on arm - at school. Age 9 - Fractured left...
