If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    ring compressor tool?

I gave this a try last night. I don't recommend it, at least on the 550s. Just not enough room to get the wrist pins in without having the outer pistons wiggle loose. And then you have to just insert them again. So I think the original approach where you get the inner pistons in and then work on...

    ring compressor tool?

From past experience the problem is always the outer pistons. Once you get the inner pistons in, you have to get the outer pistons up to get them inserted. An old forum article suggested this method: * remove the outer pistons and insert then into the block without the wrist pins and circlips...

    ring compressor tool?

Yea I had the same concern. I think I might try to fabricate something along those lines.

    ring compressor tool?

I know the traditional "tool" is to have a buddy hold the rings while you lower the cylinder block. But recently I was wondering if there's a better way. What do folks think of these...

    coil wiring polarity?

OK I went in and pulled the coils and sure enough one side was mis-wired. Here's what they looked like with the incorrect wiring: https://plus.google.com/photos/yourphotos?pid=6148136202237725666&oid=108852510929994304292 Here's a close up of the coil. Both sides have the same coil. The coil...

    coil wiring polarity?

Yea I was afraid of that.. man those coils are a pain to get to. The GS550 is so much easier to work on.

    coil wiring polarity?

On the Kat I only have two leads coming out of the coil. An upper lead and a lower lead. There are colored wires which come out of the harness and attach to the leads. I have a wiring diagram which is telling me which wires go to which coil but it doesn't tell me which lead to hook up to on the...

    coil wiring polarity?

I had to remove the coils to take the valve cover off on my Katana and now I realize I don't remember the orientation of the power leads. I know that the coils are wired so that W (white) and W/O (white/orange) is on the left and B/Y (black/yellow) and W/O (white/orange) is on the right. What...

Trouble Removing Old Gasket From Aluminum Crankcase Cover

wood chisel. Very very sharp. The sharper you can get it the better. Did I mention it should be sharp.

    problem idling during warmup

You know I can't really tell where the pilots fuel screws are set because I used the max-idle/rpm-drop method to set them. I did get around to cleaning and re-oiling the foam filter. Lots of junk came out. The thing is with those foam filters the dirt get embedded deep in the foam and gets...

    problem idling during warmup

Nothing like a nor'easter to get you into the workshop :) I did the wet float height measurement on cylinder #4: and compared it to #1: both looked fine. Here's a picture of the plugs (1 to 4 from left to right): They also look fine. #1 might be a touch rich. But there was one...

    problem idling during warmup

Just wanted to follow up on this problem. I was able to get the bike to the side of the road when the problem was happening and had a little time to try and isolate it. When the bike gets in this state the idle is weak and slowly dies off. But it can take ten seconds to die off as it warms up...

    Parking with choke on

I can't think of any problem with leaving the choke set or the petcock in the reserve position. You're a big boy. You know what they do. If you run out of gas you have a cell phone.

    problem idling during warmup

Intake boots are new as are the o-rings. The only think not new in the intake system are the airbox side boots and the airfilter. The air filter is stock and can probably be cleaned and oiled. How often does it need a cleaning? It's probably been 10k miles since the last one. Thing is I never...

    problem idling during warmup

Carbs have been synced and valve clearance checked recently. Oil and gas are fresh. Charging system looks to be in order. I did set the idle according to that method although there's at least half a turn of the pilot screw where I don't notice any change in idle. The bike gets about 50 mpg...

    problem idling during warmup

Yea its possible that its some sort of intake leak but I doubt it. You would think for starters that the rubbers would get looser as they warm up and leak more? I wouldn't say its a new problem. When I got the bike it had fuel issues and I've been fixing them one at a time. The bike used to be...

    problem idling during warmup

The manual says 1100 to 1200. When fully warm it idles at 1200. It's impossible to know the real speed since I'm not sure how accurate the tach is. I'd like to hook up an electronic tach and measure it one day. I should mention that once the bike is fully warmed up it is rock solid on idle...

    problem idling during warmup

I like to ride the 550 during the colder months but I have a nagging issue with how well it likes to idle. The bike starts on half choke every time. It seems to be able to idle at 800-900 RPM when I take it off choke after a 15 seconds. That tells me its running a bit rich and I can probably...

Motion Pro carb sync tool 08-0022

I had a little trouble with this tool as it originally was made and had to modify it by grinding down the tip of the outer (10mm I believe) hex socket part. I took it down 1-2mm so that it was flat rather than a little flared at the tip. Until I did this mod, it would slip off the jamb nut since...
