A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Weak idle until hot

What can I do about it? Only thing I know about clutch is the little adjustment wheel on the clutch lever. Also why would it idle ok in gear when cold but not when partially warmed up? Does the clutch tolerance change as it heats up?

    Weak idle until hot

Hi folks, got a 82 GS550L with 60k on her. Daily ride. This season seems to have developed a problem where the idle gets weak when the bike is partially warmed up. Bike starts great when cold and idles on choke and off choke (after about a mile on a mild temp day). It also idles strong when...

    Bouncing fuel needle

Thanks for the reply. I'll see if I can take it apart and identify what they have in there.

    Bouncing fuel needle

This is on the 82 gs550l. Bike runs great but when I run it for more than an hour or so and at highway speed the fuel level indicator goes nuts. It bounces, waves around, pegs up or down. If I shut it down and let things cool down it works normally again. Help appreciated.

How fast is is your old GS?

I got the GS550LZ on the road again and wanted to see its limits. On a flat smooth road I got it close to 80 mph but then it started to get a bit wobbly so I let up. The motor still had plenty but there's something up in the steering or suspension.

    High speed wobble?

That's what I'm thinking. With the big Givi topcase on the back and the no preload, could be it was on the verge of lifting the front wheel.

    Which fuel line to use?

Looks like the OEM spec is 7mm ID and 10.2mm OD - you can probably get away with 1/4" ID line as 7mm is about .275" - it would be a bit tight. What do folks think of silicone rubber clear lines?

    Ignition relay.

Man it would be helpful to have a brand new unit to measure on. We really don't know what the correct resistance is across any of these components and they all degrade. The bypass fix is definitely called "bypass" for a reason. It's to keep an old girl going a few more years without dropping dead.

    Which fuel line to use?

Can someone provide a vendor and specs for the correct line to use? This is on a 82 GS550LZ.

    Ignition relay.

What's nice is that all this work can be done off the bike. The only part of the job which is destructive is the cutting of the orange-white wires on the coils (between the coils and the connectors which attach to the wires). Soldering on the bullets to those orange-white wires is a bit tricky...

    Ignition relay.

Just finished doing the coil relay mod on my 1982 GS550L. The results were pretty good but I will hold off saying it was a total success until I've had more time to test. I used the $10 relay from amazon and an auto-style micro fuse holder (also from amazon). I fastened down the relay...

    High speed wobble?

Hey folks, I finally got my 1982 GS550L on the road again and it's running strong after some engine work. Yesterday I rode it hard for a few minutes, taking it near 80 mph for several miles. Once it approached that speed I noticed the steering became a little mushy and it started a slow side...

    GS450 Engine Noise

My 550 does a similar noise. Maybe not as loud but its the same ticking which comes and goes ever 1-2 seconds. I think its a "normal" feature of these motors.

    hard start when cold

That's sort of the idea I was going with. A manual switch might be fine too but I'd have to find a place for it. Although a switch like that might be useful in other situations (like a dead battery or a failed charging system). The 8616 mini relay that amazon sells for less than $10 has an NC...

    hard start when cold

This is a 1982 GS550. I recently updated the top end and it has great compression and runs strong. But it seems to suffer from an electrical issue. During my top end work I pulled the headlamp fuse (the 10A fuse for the headlights) so I could save the battery while I was working on the bike...

new head gasket on GS550 results in oil dripping from front 10mm screw

So far so good as far as leaks go. It's not insured/registered yet so I can't really go for a long ride but a few launches up and down a country road feel really strong. Much stronger than with the old sleeves.

new head gasket on GS550 results in oil dripping from front 10mm screw

So I reassembled it with the OEM head gasket and the thicker o-rings. I also applied a bit more sealer around the rectangular o-ring and a light coating of sealer on the outer edges of the mating surfaces of the head gasket. Since I didn't remove the block, I didn't disturb the base gasket so I...

new head gasket on GS550 results in oil dripping from front 10mm screw

So I tore into it today and here's what I found: 1. the surfaces are clean, flat and smooth. I mean you cannot tell there's new sleeves in there. 2. since I was using a NOS OEM gasket (I measured it at 1.25mm thick, BTW) I added the four o-rings in the corners, plus the middle o-ring. 3...

new head gasket on GS550 results in oil dripping from front 10mm screw

ok so the OEM gaskets don't have that composite core and they are stamped with "TOP"? For MLS gaskets, which side goes up?
