A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Fork oil leak

I performed a full disassembly and rebuild, and I'd recommend planning for a full Saturday for your first time (and if you don't need any parts that you can't get locally). I think 2-4 hours is realistic to just do the seals, once you know what you're doing. I must have damaged the seal when I...

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

UPDATE: I have put 3300 miles on her since my last post! It's getting cold here in Utah, but I keep adding more cold-weather gear because I don't want the season to end! The bike has been running exceptionally well, until about a week ago, when it started to hang at about 2000 RPMS at idle...

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

Well I did 250 miles yesterday! She’s running so good! Thanks to Nessism for the R/R upgrade and chuck hahn for the timing advice (and all the rest of you). You guys are awesome!

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

Well, I did a 50-mile shakedown after adjusting the timing (it was retarded probably 2?). Based on feel and responsiveness, it rode exceptionally well! Pulled hard throughout the RPM range, and when I was at 87MPH it was ready and willing to give more. chuck hahn is my hero!

    Ignitor unit and dynatek question

I ended up having to very lightly file the rotor to get it to fit onto the advancer lobes. Don't be a gorilla, be a mouse. There's no way the rotor would have gone on without filing, though. That's the price of a cheap price.

Chuck is the Ignition Whisperer! He spent some hours on the phone with me today and we got the bike running! It was too late to test ride it, but it fires right up and idles. I'll report back on the performance under load tomorrow. Thanks again, Chuck. You are the MAN!

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

Okay, I'm wiring the new electronic system up. The wires coming out of the signal generator go into the (old) TCI and then there are wires coming out of the TCI that go into the coils. I assume I'm going direct from the ignition to the coils? I am not sure which wires tap to which. If anyone...

Oil from the valve cover area. I converted to a digital tach and had to cap the tach input hole because it was spitting oil all over my front tire. :D

This is exactly what I'm dealing with! How did they hold up after a year on your bike?

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

Finally got the mechanical advance unit in the mail. I've got an allen bolt and a 19mm bolt (allen inside the 19mm) coming out of the crankshaft. Is it lefty loosey, and do I need to keep the 19mm tight? Hasn't budged yet, but I gotta get them off so I can get the signal generator out.

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

I've got one on the way! It's originally the part # for an '81GS1100E (part #33120-49211). I'll resell it as you suggest if it doesn't work. Thanks!

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

That's fair. The part number differs only slightly (33120-45110 is the original, while 33120-45020 is the $40 one you sent). The $27 one looks a little different.

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

Thanks, guys. You are both awesome for even taking the time to talk about my problems. :D Mine's an '83 850G, which does not have the mechanical advance. I spent some time last night trying to learn which might be compatible. Looks like the '83 GL, as well as a few older bikes like the '80...

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

It is a G. I guess I’m going to have to wait a little longer to get this thing back on the road! do you know what years or models have an interchangeable part? If you don’t off the top of your head I’ll do some research and find it. I sure appreciate your help!

GS850G won't go into gear from idle

This is exactly what was happening with my 850! It had been sitting for 6+ years. I took the plates out, cleaned them, then soaked them in oil overnight and reinstalled them. Clutch worked like a charm after that! Later I read about just riding it till the oil gets warmed up, and kind of...

GS850G Won't Start, Electrical Issue, No Spark

Am I understanding correctly that this would replace the signal generator, but I'd keep the mechanical advance device that's in there with the signal generator?
