A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Swingarm Bearing Woes!!!

Jim- No "bubba" here. As soon as I arrived at the welding shop, I spied this man who looked to be in his 60's and had no business at a welding shop unless he was the guy who ran it. He looked sage indeed and he garnered my trust almost immediately. When we were removing the bearing, I was...

    Swingarm Bearing Woes!!!

Sweeeeeeet!!! Sweeeeeeet!!! It's out!! I went up to the welding shop and the guy told me he could knock it out quicker than welding something up. So I hold the thing in place and he goes at it with a cold chisel and in less than one minute, it's mangled and OUT! I was impressed that he only...

    How Clean? (kinda urgent)

Poot, I use the edge of lid from a soup can. Make sure it's a pull top can like soup or cat food. It's sharp enough to skim off the gasket crap, but not near as sharp as a razor or X-acto blade. You can still gouge the aluminum with it, but you have to get somewhat aggressive with it to do...

    Swingarm Bearing Woes!!!

It moved! Problem is that it was in the wrong direction. I was working the cold chisel through the lip only getting little chunks at time. The remains are so brittle that they cannot be bent, just shattered. So, I thought I would give the lip a few whacks with a drift punch and the whole...

    Swingarm Bearing Woes!!!

Many votes for chiseling. No votes for drilling. May give it a few whacks tomorrow and see if the PB has loosened anything up. Next, chisel. Then some heat. Perhaps the welder after that... J

    Swingarm Bearing Woes!!!

Jim and hungryman, I had contemplated both scenarios. A: how could I cut into it to peel back the remains. B: could I weld something in there and yank it out. I called my dealer and he said that "they can be tough to get out and minimum cost will be a half hour of labor" which is $34...

    Swingarm Bearing Woes!!!

For those of you who were already in the know about my swingarm bearings (78 GS750E), here are some pictures of what's left of them... While I was able to remove the first one with a bearing puller (on loan from Advance Auto), the second is rusted in place and I cannot get it to come out. Any...

    Service Manuals

I would try to acquire both the factory manual and either the clymer or haynes manual. The factory manual will probably be your primary resource, but the clymer/haynes manuals will have more repair options for the home mechanic because they don't assume that you have every single Suzuki factory...

    No BLINKS??????

The $5-$7 electronic flasher should handle low loads on incandescent bulbs without any problems. I replaced the factory flasher on my 82 1100G with an generic electronic one, but the poles did not match up even though the prongs lined right up in the harness. This doesn't matter on a two prong...

    Can you ID this Caliper

Tom, Given the fact that the GN had a drum brake on a spoke rim, the caliper must be a honda model. There are several honda sites on the web and you might want to make a few posts to see if any info crops up. Also, most dealers have a book with descriptions of brake pads and a life-size...

SPEEDOMETER works - but not right away!

Scott, You've got to crack the gauges to clean the parts. Neobro has a step-by-step demo of how to do this at this link: http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_inside_gauges.htm Before he posted this, I got into my gauges by grinding/filing off some of the metal bezel that holds the glass...

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

Steve et al, Well, I guess that I am one of the lucky ones. UPS delivered my Dunlop K491 from MAW on Friday and everything was right, including the size. Now, that one is for the 750. But, after talking with bwringer and wazz, I'll need a MT90-17 for the 1100. My local tire shop is having a...

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

Well, lets hope I don't get screwed too bad. I heard something about slow shipping, so let's hope it is not any worse than that... J

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

Well, I just ordered a Dunlop 491 for the back of my 750 because MAW had a $10 s/h special on Dunlop Tires last week. The total was $85 and I should have ordered two. However, even though this is a junky tire on the back, it will certainly pass inspection since there is no cracking and the...

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

Brian, Unfortunately, it is a cheng shing, BUT, the tread on it is practically brand new. The mud in the picture makes it look worn down. I've heard mixed reviews about the cheng shings. Is this one as bad you say -- the kind of bad that is serious? Thanks- j

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

Well, I wanted to get the propeller shaft out so I could clean the threads since they need locktite. I don't want a repeat of the first picture where 3 of the screws came out and tore everything up. As you all know, getting the prop shaft out requires removing the swingarm and I asked...

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

I thought I'd post some pics of the before and after for all those interested: Beat up secondary housing: Busted up upon exit: New housing installed (I know I still have to knock down the edge of the nut!): The ol' 1100 in the stirrups! (straps hanging off of I-beam in garage)...

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

Yes, I'm keeping everything original except for the housing, oring and the new seal. The original gear/spline, bearings and shims are staying put. I used my vernier caliper to measure the distance from the edge of the gear-side race to the back part of the lip of the housing and they were...

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

McConnell, your advice worked! I loosened up the bolts, rigged up a make-shift slide hammer and gently withdrew the housing a few pulls at a time. It's out, I'm swapping housings and off to the races! Thanks to all! Jon

"Stuck" removing secondary drive unit - 1100G

Feeling better already. Well, I think I'll try doing just a few bolts like McConnell mentions and if I don't gain any ground, I'll go with FF's method. The more I think about it, it can't be ultra tight if I'm able to rotate with some taps of the hammer and punch. Truly a tap and not a whack...
