A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Rear Brake Reservoir Hose, Replace?

3/8" appears to be the winner. 5/16" drill bit drops right in to the original hose and 3/8" fits snug below the area that was already expanded by the reservoir nipple. The rib on the nipple measured 7/16" or 11 mm. The main nipple slightly larger than 3/8", roughly 10 mm. I was aware of the...

    Rear Brake Reservoir Hose, Replace?

Does 3/8" ID sound like the right size? This is my measurement with a tape measure. The existing hose seems fine, but I haven't been able to find anything local for a replacement either. I did find this vendor on Ebay...

    Rear Brake Reservoir Hose, Replace?

I have removed the brakes from the 1981 GS650L to clean and reinstall with new brake hoses. The hoses I just took off were dated 4/81, so still original equipment. Brake fluid was dark brown too, but only a bit of sediment, no chunks. I am wondering if it is necessary to replace the hose...

How much slack in front brake line?

Thanks for the tips. I just had the front end off the ground this weekend to replace the front tire. Good point on how close the brake line is to the exhaust headers. Who knows how many years the previous owner had it setup like this...

How much slack in front brake line?

I plan to replace the original brake lines on a 1981 GS650L as I get it back on the road. Previous owner swapped out the L handlebars, but never changed the front brake line. It now has a good bend in it due to the shorter distance to the handlebars. How much slack do you want to have in the...

Any need to clean this fuel tank?

Any need to clean this fuel tank?

I think you were reading my mind about the new petcock and gaskets: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=224840

1981 GS650L Fuel Cock Gasket and Sender Drain Hose?

Finally getting to the stage of reinstalling the fuel tank. Tank was dry when I bought the bike and previous owner had indicated an issue with the fuel cock leaking and said that he had replaced the gasket. I had noticed that the fuel cock was damp even just sitting on my shelf, so assumed it...

Any need to clean this fuel tank?

1981 GS650L fuel tank: Was considering trying out the electrolysis method of fuel tank cleaning with Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda, but the tank does not show much signs of rust. Fuel cock strainer also looks clean. The thing next to the fuel cock appears to be a bit of paper towel or...

    1981 GS650L Tire Sizes

You are right about that. Either the Shinko 230 or 712 are probably good for the price. $115 - $130. The Pirelli MT66 would be about $190 to match the original tire sizes.

    1981 GS650L Tire Sizes

A question about tire sizes for the 1981 GS650L. Original tire sizes: Front - 90/90-19 Rear - 130/90-16 So far, the only tire set that I have seen with these sizes is the Pirelli MT66. Any other tire set, such as the Shinko 712 or Pirelli Sport Demon, would have to increase the front tire...

81GS650L Spark Plug Wire Connections / Firing Order

WOW! Really runs well when you put the spark leads to the correct cylinders. 45 minutes from start of swapping leads, vacuum syncing carbs, and setting the idle back to 1,100 RPM. :D

81GS650L Spark Plug Wire Connections / Firing Order

Kevin, Your GS650L is coming along nicely. I have been following your posts since you are a few steps ahead of where I am with the same bike. Not sure mine is going to clean up as nicely. Just to clarify, should you have said 1 and 4 from the left coil and 2 and 3 from the right coil? Your...

81GS650L Spark Plug Wire Connections / Firing Order

Thanks Steve. That should explain why only half the engine is running  Now I need this work day to end so that I can go home and try this out. Next confession, the two different size spark plug boots. Two short ones were on the left side and two longs on the right side. I thought...

81GS650L Spark Plug Wire Connections / Firing Order

Staring another thread for my misfire issues with a different question and hopefully this might be the solution rather than believing that I didn't do a good job cleaning and rebuilding the carburetors. :) I think this is probably what is going on, but want to double check that I made a newbie...

    81GS650L Misfire

Couple of new points. Carbtune: Hooked up the Carbtune to check the sync. When I first hooked it up it wasn't registering any vacuum with 8 cm Hg being as low as the gauge goes. I had to turn it upside down so that 18 becomes zero. The gauge was only moving to about 21 with the engine idling at...

    81GS650L Misfire

I have been turning the screws in which seemed to improve the situation. When I rebuilt the carbs, I started at 2.5 turns out. I went to 3 turns out when trying to get it started earlier. Now I am at about 1.5 turns out. If I am understanding this chart correctly...

    81GS650L Misfire

Received my new NGK spark plug boots and tachometer cable so I could continue trying to get the bike running again after a few years of sitting. It is running now, but has a misfire at idle, not the higher rpm's. Here is a link to a 20 second video of the timing of the pops...

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

Spark plug wires were trimmed before replacing the boots. No. 4 carburetor was also the worst of the four when cleaning. Slide and needle were both stuck in place. Everything seemed ok after cleaning and putting it back together and the float test/adjustment was good. Compression test...

Compression: Before and After Valve Adjustment

Thanks, makes sense. At least 120 is perfectly fine for starting compression.
