A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Any resources on 1979 to 1980+ ignition coil pickup swap AKA ditching points cheap

Will update this thread for posterity in case another idiot wants to follow in my footsteps. Haha. It pays to look at a diagram. The big difference in the ignition systems between the 79 and 80+ is the ignitor box. Duh.

Any resources on 1979 to 1980+ ignition coil pickup swap AKA ditching points cheap

Meh. What fun is that? Plus...I already have the parts for an updated conversion. The last thing I need to do is throw more money at this bike if I don't have to.

Any resources on 1979 to 1980+ ignition coil pickup swap AKA ditching points cheap

Awesome! Good info and glad it's worked for someone else. I'll double check my work and make sure I got polarity right. Also, I used the 79 coils and wires. Is there any reason that I need to use the 80's here or are they essentially the same other than connectors? Anything else I should check...

Any resources on 1979 to 1980+ ignition coil pickup swap AKA ditching points cheap

Hi, I've got a 1979 GS850 and a 1980. The 1980 looks nicer and I prefer it, so I gave it my Dyna 2000 ignition. It runs great. The 1979 has never really started well. The Dyna lived on it for a bit until I pulled it off and added it to the 1980. Now the 1979 won't start at all. My question is...

1980 GS850 BS32 Carb Float Needle Valve Spring Source?

Don't need it? I can live with that. Especially since my search is turning up zilch. The carb diagrams I've looked through don't even have it listed. Unless someone makes an argument otherwise, this GS will save some weight without the 2 milligram retainer. Haha! Thanks for the info, Ed.

1980 GS850 BS32 Carb Float Needle Valve Spring Source?

My carb saga continues: working on a new to me 1980 GS850GT with the BS32 CV carbs. One of the float needle valve springs is not there and I can't find a source for it or even a part number. Plenty of float needle valve and seat assemblies but none I can find look like they have the spring...

Carb Gurus: Difference between 1980-81 and 82-83 BS32SS Carb

Awesome, thanks guys. I ordered the 82-83 body. It looks like I can return it if it doesn't work, but everything Steve has written has proven correct for me so far. Thanks again.

Carb Gurus: Difference between 1980-81 and 82-83 BS32SS Carb

Hi, Long story short, I need a LH or #1 carb body for my 1980 GS850G. There's a used LH BS32 body on ebay but it's for a 82-83 GS850. I notice there are different part numbers for the body (13200-45110 vs. 13201-45160). Would someone tell me what the difference is? I'm guessing I can't use...

Hmmm. All copied and pasted from my google photos and viewable on my screen. Relative noob here, but I'll see what's going on as this process works a charm on other forums that I am a veteran of (ADV Rider, etc). Thanks for the heads up.

Gas Cap and Seat Lock Tumblers/Keys

Thanks for taking the time to post such an informative answer. I haven't tried the local locksmith in my small town and saw a thread here so figured I would reach out to the community in the know. Not too concerned with security but the buggered face of the tumbler is an eye sore to me and worth...

How to Modify Steering Stops for Aftermarket Bars?

Nice! I'd love to see some close up pics. I'm a decent welder and that didnt even cross my mind to be honest. I always like modifications to be removable by the next guy but this might be the best option. After all, just about anything is removable with the right grinding wheel or torch!

How to Modify Steering Stops for Aftermarket Bars?

I'm not Rich, but JB Weld has worked fantastic for that sort of thing in all my quick-fixes of the past, especially if you've got a replacement you just need rainy-day-time to install.

How to Modify Steering Stops for Aftermarket Bars?

I've seen nuts JB Welded to the existing stops. Hoping for something a little more elegant but something like that might have to do! LoL

The Michio Zombie: My 1979 GS850G

With valves on the loose end of spec, carbs rebuilt and set to spec, new throttle cables added, electrical updated, fluids flushed and filled, a few things painted, lots of hardware replaced, seat recovered and the newish battery charged, it was time to fire this Japanese beaut to life. Insert...

And then I waited a bit. And then waited some more. Turns out the mail is slow these days. Time to smell the roses (Columbines here in Colorado, that is) And then, just like that, everything showed up. Time to replace o-rings and gaskets. The pilot fuel needle on carb #2 was worse for wear...

The Michio Zombie: My 1979 GS850G

I stripped the seat down and was horrified at the rust. Not something I'm used to here in the SW. It was paper thin, and the edges had rusted down to sharp, tetanus-inducing serrated knives; not serviceable in my eyes and made me appreciate the composite pans of the future. So I found a new...

The Michio Zombie: My 1979 GS850G

And then to get an idea of the last time the valves were spec'd: Not great! Cyl 1 had its exhaust valve so tight I couldn't get my .01mm feeler in. All the rest were out of spec except Cyl 2 exhaust, but I was able to shuffle around shims until all I needed was two 2.70mm. My GS buddy Mike...
