A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

81 GS650L Seat Cover Lock Eyelet

It is about 1" ID for the existing grommet.

81 GS650L Seat Cover Lock Eyelet

Kind of an odd question, but I ordered a new seat cover from B&H Specialties. The cover arrived and looks good, but there is no eyelet in the back end of the cover for access to the seat lock. The original is a 1" eyelet crimped into the seat cover. Any suggestions for finding such an eyelet...

    Fuel Tank Evaporation?

Bikes are stored in an unheated/uninsulated shed. I will keep things as is and not drain the fuel for the winter which is what I have done in the past, just top of the tank with more stabilized fuel. Batteries are the only things that have been removed to keep inside. Reinstall the battery and...

    Fuel Tank Evaporation?

I've been working on the 1981 GS650L since April and the fuel tank has been on the bike since the end of July with a new OEM fuel cock. I haven't ridden the bike that much, but wanted to keep the tank full to prevent condensation and rusting. It appears that fuel is evaporating from the tank...

    81 GS650L, Choke doesn't do much/anything

I checked the markings on each component and everything was to original spec. The rubber plugs over the pilot jets were replaced as most were dry and would not stay in by themselves. I don't think the PO was very ambitious with any modifications. Anything stamped with a MFG date was still...

    81 GS650L, Choke doesn't do much/anything

Finally pulled out the spark plugs this weekend to see how they looked: The appearance of the spark plugs would suggest that it is running rich instead of lean and not a clogged carburetor issue. They are all fairly consistent too. Could it be that the air filter is not letting through...

    81 GS650L, Choke doesn't do much/anything

Did the carb cleaner spray test today to see if I could detect any vacuum leaks at the intake boots. No change in idle while spraying all around the intakes...

    81 GS650L, Choke doesn't do much/anything

I have been pretty lucky with the condition of this bike so far. It hadn't run for a few years before I got it, but it was kept in the garage all of the time. The tank is very clean, definitely no rust or debris coming from the tank to clog things up. Fuel petcock and hoses were replaced with...

    Sounds like do over time.

    81 GS650L, Choke doesn't do much/anything

Choke is full closed once it is running and idling smoothly. Starting procedure: Fuel on prime or run. Choke fully open. Start. Stumbles around below 1,000 rpm. Play with choke knob, no changes. Start closing choke. Add throttle to improve idle (enricher circuit must be working somewhat...

    81 GS650L, Choke doesn't do much/anything

I did follow the carb rebuild tutorial and did make the mistake the first time of almost shooting myself in the eye with carb cleaner when the spray came flying through the passages. They were clogged before I started, but I had fluid spraying through all passages before putting things back...

    81 GS650L, Choke doesn't do much/anything

Not having too much trouble getting the bike started, but the choke doesn't have any effect. Bike will stumble along below 1,000 rpm on cold start and eventually I will be able to give it some throttle to get it warmed up and idling smoothly at 1,100 rpm. Carbs were dipped, all o-rings replaced...

Removing Exhaust Header, number 2 is stuck

They are out: I did stop off at the hardware store today to get a pick set. Took the only thing they had, but ended up breaking the tips off two of the picks and then gave up on them. At least the broken tips were retrievable. Cylinder no. 3 had some difficulty coming out as you can see.

Removing Exhaust Header, number 2 is stuck

You guys were right, but it took some prying and banging to get it out. Once no. 2 came loose, the whole exhaust just dropped off. Now, any tips for getting the old gaskets out? Thanks, Dave

Removing Exhaust Header, number 2 is stuck

Any tips or tricks for removing the exhaust header to replace the gaskets? 1, 3, and 4 are coming out, but no. 2 has not budged. The header bolts are out of course, but I only removed two other bolts at the passenger foot pegs to release the whole exhaust system as one unit. A bit of corrosion...

    81GS650L Exhaust Leak?

Thanks for the links. The Jaquish Motorsports option looks interesting. Was thinking that the engine might be able to pull air back in from the exhaust header if it expands more with heat causing the fuel mixture to get lean. On the intake side, boots and o-rings are good. Airbox and air filter...

    81GS650L Exhaust Leak?

The 1981 GS650L that I have been working on since April is now registered and inspected. On my first test ride I found that the idle was hanging after the bike got warmed up during riding which it wasn't doing all of the time that I was working on it in the shed. The next ride was to the...

    First Ride - 1981 GS650L

The 1981 Suzuki GS650L saw its first sunlight since I brought it home in April and its first ride in a few years according to the previous owner. Didn't stray too far from home on the maiden voyage and it's not registered yet either, so I put about 9 miles on the odometer on the quiet roads...

    Rear Brake Reservoir Hose, Replace?

Still wondering if I bought the right thing. Went to Autozone this morning and asked for 3/8" hose that would resist brake fluid. The gave me a 1' piece of hose, ArmorMark 50280-25, that says it meets SAE J1532. Looking up that specification indicates that this is an transmission oil cooler...

    Rear Brake Reservoir Hose, Replace?

Thanks again for the EPDM hose type. Local auto parts store has Prestone Radiator Overflow Tubing which is 3/8" ID EPDM hose. $1.99 for 2'. This hose is good for 25 psi and there shouldn't be any pressure in the reservoir hose.
