All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    GS1100 runs out of fuel

You beat me to it. Most (all?) of the petcocks have an in-tank screen. I had an '82 GS850 that had identical symptoms; a screen-ectomy solved the problem 100%.

just nabbed a mint 99 marauder. stock pipes are WAY to quiet

First of all, my post was not boarderline disrespectful. It was blunt. There's a difference. So, in the same post, you state that you couldn't care less about anyone else wanting peace & quiet, but for some reason, you feel entitled to 'common decency'. This double standard is par for...

just nabbed a mint 99 marauder. stock pipes are WAY to quiet

Loud pipes suck, nearly as badly as the laws that tolerate them. Other than that, I guess they're OK, as long as they're far, far away from me.

Dumb question time - why do we GS'ers need a vacuum petcock?

The vacuum petcock is an ingenious and simple approach to preventing the incident you read about. I love safety devices that require no effort or diligence on my part. When you start your bike, your engine generates vacuum which opens the petcock to replenish what was already in the bowls...

    Storm's Summer Motorcycle Adventure

In cases like this, I wonder if a bicycle computer wouldn't make a good quick improv. They're cheap, easy to install & waterproof, with (usually) a nice big digit readout. Just figure out away to mount the magnet on the wheel & zip-tie the pickup.

Thinking about buying this 750 Suzuki

Aim higher. That one's a mess, and it'll cost you a substantial amount just to get it running & safe to ride. If you want it cosmetically nice, you'll spend a lot more than you'd spend just buying one in nice shape. That's a parts bike, and even at that it's rough.

    unfortunately no more GS

Living in Galesburg, you have the same limited riding season I do. If you can spend more of that limited time enjoying a bike rather than sweating over one, good for you. We could (but we won't) conjure up an impromptu poll of how many die-hard members here own at least one late-model bike in...

GS850G 1981 with runaway throttle... scary.. whats wrong with it?

Carbs that are out of sync (balance) can cause a runaway idle as the engine warms up. So will intake leaks. I'm guessing you have both. You don't mention if you replaced the intake O-rings; you keep mentioning some 'dab of silicone'. The solution is dirt cheap and eliminates about 3,000...

    Charging Problems

It sure looks "L" to me. The usual "L" sidecovers are sort of triangular. I'll have to look up an older 550L to see for sure. Perhaps that "E" sidecover was 'adapted' onto the bike. As for the stator -- on a GS of that age, it's very probable that this isn't the first time the charging...

    Charging Problems

Don't buy either OEM charging component, try to cancel the order for the carb kits (or return them), and wait for Posplayer to drop by with links to all the good info available here. You'll be able to make a far better remedy for much less money. Since you're a journeyman electrician, I can...

    Intake boots : o-ring or x-ring ?

Well, you could do some research. For example: This or this. There's a mention of some advantage in static applications, but they sure don't elaborate. There's no relative motion at the boot/head interface (other than relative thermal expansion rates), and when new and supple, the Viton...

After 37 years of owning motorcycles, I did it-

Maybe once my Honda-potamus wears out... Congrats on remaining among the living! I was fairly surprised to see how many basket-cases like me frequent the Goldwing forums, where one long-lasting topic is "Should I Ride Motorcycles While On Blood Thinners?". Over on those forums, though, there...

    Mystery washer in my sump!

I dunno. I'd certainly check for a missing thrust washer on that starter idler -- they're easy to drop into the sump (but easier than you'd expect to retrieve), but that washer doesn't look glossy enough, or hardened... we shall wait in eager anticipation.

There's bundles of them on ebay, fwiw.

    Bike stumbles after replacing o-rings

First: Get the valve clearances right, to avoid damage & have a consistent baseline. After that, I'd suggest seat time. Put a thousand miles on it (really easy to do!) and see if that doesn't correct some problems.

Orientation and routing of front cables (GS 850GT)

Don't feel bad. I've seen numerous pictures over the years of meticulously overhauled Zooks with the clutch cable clearly routed incorrectly. The correct routing actually LOOKS wrong. And the number of questions about front wheel / axle shims & spacers -- goes on forever, even though there...
