A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    motorized bikes?

Like a lot of folks, probably, I built numerous small engine-powered bicycles as a kid. Usually, tiller (or old upright mower) engines -- it takes a horizontal shaft. Very police-unfriendly, but a lot of fun. A little primitive, maybe, but we were on a budget.

    2 days and still plugged

From the title, I thought this would be a discussion of supplemental fiber.

Series R/R installations at the GSR

I've seen the claim of 775 failures before, on a V-Strom site. What I read involved original equipment failure on Polaris products. The DL's & SV's tend to exhibit the same stator problems as the GS's (and probably every other permanent magnet 3-phase system), and the installation of a...

    Ageing and cracking side walls

That would kinda indicate that the MOT is still the fleecing 'vehicle' it was in the late 70's when I was over there. It was just a toss of the dice back then -- whatever the garage felt like 'finding' at fault, well, tough luck. Go to a different garage and pay the MOT fee again, and again...

My Blue Ridge Parkway Ride 2016

Ebay? ....... Yeah! I searched on "Sidestand switch" and got about a million hits, with neat photos of every variety of sidestand switch imaginable, some with universal-looking mounting bolt patterns. Ten, twelve bucks, most of them.

My Blue Ridge Parkway Ride 2016

Wow, tough break. Probably every rider on this forum has gotten away with a sidestand 'error' at least once. Several times, for me, but all it cost me was embarrassment. For that switch, perhaps look into an OEM Suzuki part for a model that used the idiot light. I'm about 99% sure my '82...

Stupid Newby Tricks -- Riding with kickstand down and trying to turn left

Some of the Nighthawks (including mine) actually came with that -- and it's considered a wear item. There's a little 'wear limit' line on them. They don't help much, though; in the interest of science, I tested it in a real-life situation, and it's every bit as disturbing and embarrassing as...

    Cleaning bugs off your bike

When I have water (hose, actually) -- keep them wet for a while whilst doing other cleaning, and then I use a little Dawn dish soap on my bare hands to clean them off. That way, I can feel any stubborn critters, and if I need a bit more coercion, I can use a damp fingernail. Especially for...

    Which Garmin?

For the bikes, I use the Garmin 2720. It's truly a dinosaur of a GPS, but I have them (I have two) updated to 2016 maps, and they're designed for bikes & weather exposure. They've been through deluges without a glitch, and they don't exhibit that 'power loss / reboot' problem of car oriented...

O rings for carb interconnect tubes GS850 (1980)

... actually, I drove straight through. I'm home, busy recovering from my vacation. Thanks, though!

Indian Head Shellac on the intake boots?

I would think (hope) that a scraper with a new single-edged razor would clean that stuff up. If necessary, add chemistry (gasket remover aerosol). I'd avoid abrasives. All you really need is a flat plane surface (a bit redundant, that); let the O-ring do the sealing. It's there to...

    HELP, any electrical gurus.

Yes, you should. Also select the mA position on the function dial. You can ignore the shunt diagram they show you; it's for measuring really large current flows. It's correct in that you'd have to disconnect a battery terminal and put the meter in series with the load.

Cleaning old wiring for soldering or crimping and DIY DeOxit

Excellent post. I was pretty surprised that DeOxit works for this purpose; I was accustomed to the 'mini-wire wheel on the Dremel' routine, and it really gets tiring and time-consuming. I will try your trick the next time the opportunity (or chore...) presents itself.

Local shop quote for valve adjustment

Well, count on at least one frustrating hour getting that old gasket off, if it's been a couple of years since it was installed. Add a full can of gasket dissolving spray. I think they're hedging their estimate based in part on the possibility of a damaged / impossible fastener, too, a very...

    A time of pilgrimage approaches.

Not sure this belongs here, but nowhere else looked appropriate either... It's starting to look like I'll need to use every heat-management trick available for the first leg from Chicago to Maggie Valley. From there, I've added an extra day to attack Clingmans Dome (with my newly overhauled...

    Finished 80 GS1000G project

Looks great. Well worth the effort; that bike should last darned near forever now. 1.8 millimeters of clearance? Good lord, that's the Grand Canyon, more or less!

    Good dual-sport bike.

I picked up the DL in my sig in mid-spring. So far, so good. It's a fun & odd little bike. Very quiet exhaust, but all sorts of weird and troubling mechanical noises that everyone has assured me are normal. Actually not such a little bike, with the same capacity fuel tank as the original...

What is the Mesh size on Mikuni Needle valve seat screens?

They're still available OEM. Part number 13376-44080. Kinda pricey, though.
