    Laying up GS's correctly.

As you may have seen from the Projects/rebuilds section I am working at getting my GS1000 running after 11 long years of hiding and being neglected. Its safe to say that I did nothing to save it, I just rolled the bike in the garage and stopped riding it. I also did the same for my full nut an...

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Cheers Londonboards. That was how it went back together. That is with the bike supposedly at idle. Knew something was wrong when it was together but couldn't work out what. Think I know now. I have since removed the tick over screw to clean it up.

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Its been bugging me for a couple of days and then a light went on in my head. Did I put the throttle retaining bracket on the right way around? Should the prongs go up or down? That would make a huge different to the pull on the butterflies and then the carbs setting. Anyone help me out...

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Yes. Correct. I cant buy carb dip here in the UK and I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner. Carb bodies been boiled in hot water and washing powder. I've been offered to borrow/use an ultrasonic cleaner so that looks like my next step once I can get mobile enough to get to it. (W are limited on...

Yes, sadly. Wondered if I had put the cables on wrongly too. That's as far as I am going today. Chokes and mixture screws still in the top half of the body.

Carbs, carbs and carbs...... Look away if you dont like bits. Carbs on the throttle cable. Seem a little bit too open for my thinking..... Full throttle.... Full throttle seems a very short twist, less than quarter of a twist from idle to full on. This is Idle. Too far open? And its...

OK, what did I do wrong? Still no parts so got bored. What the heck its only a few bolts and screws...... And hour later and the carbs are back in the bike, buttoned up and ready to go. Odd thing, the throttle linkages seem very high and theres not a lot of turn on the twist grip from 'tick...

Right cylinder not firing '82 GS300L

Once you have a strong spark then go after fouled up plugs, fueling issues, air box, pods, O rings seals, carb boots etc etc etc. Be nice to also drop a 'Hello' in the GS Owners part on the forum too.

Right cylinder not firing '82 GS300L

There are lots of 'could be's' trying to sort an issue down. To make an engine run you need several things. Spark, fuel, air and compression. Have you got all of those? So start with one thread till that part is sorted. You have no or an intermittent spark on one cylinder. Chase that fault...

Been a bit slow here the last few days. Waiting on parts to arrive before taking the next step on the GS. So I have been busy on the GS(X)1100ESD that's been left unloved since 2006. I did a full nut and bolt restore on her in 2005/2006 took her to a very large classic motorcycle show and it...

    Suzuki and DOHC Engine Emblems

The originals were a thin metal plate with glue. You just peeled them off and stuck the new one on. The new one (in the day) had a light tan coloured paper that cover the glue size. Line the notch up with the case and push on. Job done.

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Carbs sorted. A 0.8mm x 4.0mm x 100mm screwdriver arrived in the post. Carb bowls off, pilots jets out.... 2 pilots completely blocked, 1 partially blocked and 1 with only 1 small side hole clear........no wonder she wouldn't run on idle. Into cleaning agent and a blow through with the...

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

I'm still waiting for the pilot jets screwdriver to arrive in the post and I've got a few more bits arrived in the post. So choices. Do I refit the carbs and run them in the hope of warming the engine up enough to get the 3 small bolts out between the head and the barrels or just go for for it...

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Spent some time on the carbs this morning and lunch time. Pulled No4 apart once again and when I got the needle out found a 2mm strip of a slightly darker line than the bright surface of the rest of the needle. Cleaned the seat and the needle, rebuilt and tested. The carbs held fuel...

    OK. What did I miss.

Stripped No 4 down this morning and found the fault. A very small film of black 'dust' on about 2mm of the float needle. Recleaned the brass needle seat and the needle jet, refitted and tested. No more leaking fuel. Must have had remaining fine dirt in the fuel line that made its way in.

    OK. What did I miss.

Yep. Done all new O rings, tapped the bowl with the handle end of my screwdriver and its still leaking. All I can guess is it's the needle valve has an issue that you can't see yet when it's in the carb its not functioning right. It would probably work fine on the bike with the vacuum tap...

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

This is on the bench (well chest freezer actually) and the tank is a on off/tap. Stripped them down again, checked and rebuilt them. Its not leaking from the float bowl gasket but from the opening. So something is not shutting off with the float needle in No 4. Can be the new O rings surely?
  20. Suzuki Mad

    OK. What did I miss.

Stripped and cleaned the carbs. Fitted new 'O' rings, all seemed good. Bench testing them before fitting on the bike, reserve bottle to main fuel feed for about 5 minutes and then fuel starts to drip from carb no 4. It appears to be coming out of the main appartture of the carb and just on No...
