If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Cleaned connections and it rode beautifully for about an hour. It seems to get bad when it heats up.

Removed the secondary gears. The driven gear has a huge polished surface so it looks like too much contact I'll post some images.

1980 GS850G trans or shaft hum

I've only ridden it for an hour 3 hours since I put it back together so I haven't drained the gear oil yet. I'll do that today and check for metal in the oil. It's possible that it could be out of phase as I'm sure the gears turned multiple times when I swapped the housing.

1980 GS850G trans or shaft hum

Thanks mate. I'll pull it all down today and reassemble with the gears marked and check the contact. I would have thought that using all the same parts minus the aluminum driven gear housing would have ensured a very similar contact area but I guess not, unless the noise is being caused by...

1980 GS850G trans or shaft hum

Wondering if incorrectly torqued nut on the output/driven gear shaft could cause it ? I'll double check it all. Just made certain that I reused all the original parts except the housing which was replaced due to a crack

1980 GS850G trans or shaft hum

I will pull the secondary drive and driven gears and check them out. I don't have the correct service tool for checking backlash tho. Any other tools I can use instead?

1980 GS850G trans or shaft hum

I only bought the used part for the housing itself. It didn't come with shims so I had to use my existing ones. I also used my existing bearing and gear and just mounted them in the new housing. What do you suggest ? I also noticed that the spacer on the replacement part was 1 long spacer and 2...

    1980 GS850 missfire

I should clarify. New coils on this with new leads. Fuze box has been replaced and it's currently using a moto gadget m-unit for relay circuit and switches. The charging and ignition circuits do not go through the updated unit. They are independent.

    1980 GS850 missfire

Here is a short video reading direct to battery. You can hear it is breaking up a bit and misfiring at this point. But voltage seems ok. https://youtube.com/shorts/wzRI_z-InA0?si=tLFTppY2nptozv__

    1980 GS850 missfire

I definitely feel like this is a connection issue. I replaced a battery and it rode well for 3 days without any trouble starting or stuttering. Then it randomly misfires and rides fine again. I'll be going through the wiring and connections tonight and tomorrow

1980 GS850G trans or shaft hum

Thanks. It's possible that it is clearance relatively. On the output gear assembly there are 2 shims which I reinstalled. Here is a YouTube link to ta video I recorded today to give you a good idea. The hum seems to match the revs but it's inconsistent...

1980 GS850G trans or shaft hum

Hi guys. Replaced the output shaft seal and the output gear assembly for a good used one. Used a good bearing. After reassembly all seems fine. But when the bike is warmed up and been riding for 10 minutes I start to get a him or moan. It's hard to tell if it's the shaft, rear hub or gear...

    Removal of gs850g driveshaft seal.

Well after ordering a replacement seal with, I was disappointed to find that it doesn't fit. Dimensions are quite different even tho the part number corresponds. 1980 gs850g. 09283-32017-000 is the part I received. It has to large a diameter just slightly

    Removal of gs850g driveshaft seal.

Thanks mate. That's what I was looking for. I thought it was the seal that was leaking but it appears to be cracked on the round aluminum mounting plate. Engine is fine. I'll need to order the whole new assembly on eBay. I think that's the cheapest route being from Australia

    Removal of gs850g driveshaft seal.

Hey guys, I have a 1980 gs850g with the drive shaft seal leak on the engine side. I am at a point where I've removed the rear wheel, the shaft, and everything else, but I just can't get to the seal because the secondary gear assembly is locked in place. I've removed the 4 bolts but she is seized...

Which components to swap when going LifePo4

Hey guys. I have a LifePo4 battery from an old project that I'd like to use on my 1980 gs850g. I'm just wondering which stator or reg/rec I can use with this change and what I should avoid. The battery has BMS built in so I'm wondering if it will be fine as it is.

    1980 GS850 missfire

Ok voltage up to around 13.8 max regardless of how high the revs are. Tested the stator at approximately 4000rpm. 63, 63, 63, and one was a little higher at around 66.
