A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Which thread repair?

The biggest compliant with the coil types is that they sometimes back out with the screw on disassembly. I'm told the fix for this is to stake the material near the top end of the coil so it can't back out. I've never done this myself; just reporting what I've been told. The machine shop I work...

    Offered a (mostly)complete 1980 GS1000G for my 78 550E, what to do?

Stock bars are halfway to L. I think they're meant to be paired with a Windjammer. Drag bars are too low and straight, Daytonas are a good height but too much bend. I like GP touring, Euro bend, superbike. IIRC you're a couple inches taller than me, so weight my thoughts with that in mind. I...

    Offered a (mostly)complete 1980 GS1000G for my 78 550E, what to do?

The airbox is not correct for the '80. I wonder if this thing was merged with an 1100G. The seat and airbox are in question, but apparently functional. It makes me wonder if the carbs are jetted correctly. Overall, it looks like a solid project that will need a little love. Hard to say on the...

3D Printer parts, files, STL, materials?

It's a lot easier said than done. Materials that can survive out in the sun are more difficult to work with and may have some undesirable properties. The CAD work is non-trivial, and surface finish for cosmetic parts would be just unacceptable without a lot of post-processing. I've done some...

    update on my 1100GK

Well, if it IS the valve seals, they can be swapped without removing the head. Fill the cylinder with rope to hold the valves up while the springs are out. You'll need to rig something to compress the springs safely, and the old seals can be very stubborn to remove. I have heard of valve guides...

    Get clutch cover loose……?

I never thought to try it that way. I always have everything disconnected and ready to come off.

    Get clutch cover loose……?

Maybe I've always been lucky. The clutch lever itself can be used to push the cover away from the cases. I usually augment the leverage a bit with a wrench.

Check with an industrial supplier. Maybe McMaster-Carr.

    Gs1000g airbox boots

850G and 1000G boots definitely do not interchange. BS32 vs BS34. If they're shriveled up and hard, the 1000G boots can be made to work on the 850G in a pinch. I did the BC rally that way one year. (Both 1980 bikes.) I don't know what happened, but both bikes had relatively new boots, and that...

    1980 gs1000g carb question

Is there a problem with the old seats that keeps you from reusing them? I've heard of the needles wearing a groove in the tip, but I haven't heard of the seats going bad. Some kind of corrosion maybe, or some uncleanable schmoo? The floats should keep the needle in there.

Is that the gas station in Tell City where you all waited for me to get back from Walmart with new shorts?

You probably know I am Goldwing addicted - You can be too -- Look Inside ;)

Significantly less than a GS. From what I've seen, it's the aftermarket highway pegs that touch first. I watched Steve's brother-in-law plow a furrow in some WV blacktop with his Kuryakyn about 10 years ago.

At BC this year, I passed one going the other way while I was leaned into a right hander. I maybe could have made it under, if I was hanging off. I don`t actually want to try it, but my brain evaluated it as a potential escape route.

    Gasoline IV bottle

I`m too cheap for all that. I set the bike`s tank on one of my Harbor Freight workmate clone things and ran some hoses to the carbs. I hope the welded one finds its way back. that sounds nice.

    Cu head gasket

Did someone say Dogma? I'm pretty sure I saw that cutout on my head when it was off. It's just clearance for drilling one of the diagonal oil passages. Not functional in any other way.

Where to set idle speed screw after carb rebuild for 1st start? Rule of thumb?

Run it in until it bottoms out, gently. then back it out 3 full turns. That should be plenty rich enough to start.

    '81 gs1000g starter clutch compatability

The crank diameter is the same on the G and the E. The hub diameter on the gear where the rolers run is different. If you get a starter clutch with the gear and the bearing, it should work.

GS1000G Oil Leak - oil pressure sender unit?

The carbs should come off and go back on pretty easily. If not, you probably need new intake rubber anyway. An maybe a general re-sealing of the whole intake system. If you haven't already, it probably needs it. The tensioner may be leaking, and that could look like something from the gallery...

Yup, that was my first track day. I got bumped from novice to intermediate and I spent probably 5 laps following Robin on that Seca 400 getting a feel for that kind of traffic on track.
