A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Confessions of a troubled history in motorcycling

I figured an on-board compressor would be involved. It might just be easier to rig a right-foot shifter and move the rear brake to a thumb.

That's inconvenient. Maybe a pneumatic shifter?

1980 GS850GLT - Getting her back up to riding condition

Speaking from experience with that particular model, I would recommend an item for your to-do list. Verify correct function of the petcock valve. In the prime position, you should be able to suck on the vacuum port and feel the valve actuate and stay actuated with no more air flowing through...

    Rear shock shopping

I have the GK luggage on mine, and had to mount the shocks with the reservoir ahead of the shock instead of behind. I also had to trim the luggage rack just slightly.

Confessions of a troubled history in motorcycling

I forgot about the Cub. The others I'd never heard of. It sounds like the Yammie had other issues that might have kept the bike from being a success. I did some Gargling and found somebody fabricated a cover for a V-Strom, but they're not something yo can generally buy aftermarket. It seems like...

Confessions of a troubled history in motorcycling

They both have their purpose. It's not worth arguing about which is best. Both and neither. An enclosed chain would be most of the best of both worlds, but it hasn't been done sine the early 20th century with a heavy casting. As far as know.

    Rear shock shopping

A Racetech front end definitely highlights the rear end problems. $900 at YSS will get you shocks with the same features as about $2000 at Racetech. At least, that was the case when I got mine. Hagons or YSS, should be able to get you set up with the correct damping and springs after you tell...

    Helmet Visor fog and rain

Gas station squeegees are pretty hit and miss. A lot of stations don't bother to keep any or they're dry, etc. A cursory examination is all you need to make sure you're not about to plow a furrow into your visor. It's not like there's ever shards of metal or glass embedded in the sponge, and...

Brake rotor is stuck to rear rim

Acorn nuts and copper washers? There should be hex head screws and underneath them, a plate with a tab bent up against the hex on each screws. once those are off, it should lift off, IIRC. Do you have something nonstandard going on? Edit: Sniped by Rijko. Nice pic!

    Killswitch not working

Bike bandit is probably expensive. Definitely more expensive than a cleaning. You local auto parts place should have contact cleaner and dielectric grease to protect them after. If that doesn't fix things, you'll need to do some diagnosis with a meter to find where the problem really is.

STT > Gratten Michigan, July 3

I've been bringing a 10' x 10' canopy to the Motoworks events at Gingerman. We usually have two or three. I sort of bought it for that purpose, but occasionally find other uses for it.

I doubt I could ever get there in mid June, but I'd like to. What spread of bikes do you see at that event? Do they run classes based on displacement?

    Separate Rotor From Starter Clutch

Good point. Since it's out, taking out those three screws to clean and inspecting the internals isn't a bad idea.

    Suzuki Gs850 EFI Conversion

It's been a while. Probably since TBS ran them every night for two weeks back in the mid nineties. Always something on to watch for those two weeks. I think that one was Moonraker.

    Separate Rotor From Starter Clutch

OK. Only the rotor sits on the taper. Since it spins with the crank, some scoring there shouldn't be a problem. Now that you have the gear off and can get at the screws, what did you find inside?
  19. Dogma

Welp, not a good end to the day.

Late to the party here, but I do want to affirm that this sucks. I have some attachment to that bike too, and I'm sad to hear it's wrecked. Good job being protected. Maybe not a good job on the braking; we all probably need more drilling on emergency stops. But that's the problem with a left...

    Separate Rotor From Starter Clutch

I didn't mean the crankshaft, but it's interesting you point out scoring there. The gear should run freely on the crank. The 1000G even has a roller bearing there. Scoring there suggests oil deprivation. I was wondering why a starter clutch would lock up. Like Big T pointed out, it's the part...
