A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    1983 GS1100E Clutch parts questions

I just replaced the frictions in my 83 850 and I used EBC plates because they are about half the cost of OEM. I've put a few hundred miles on them, so far so good. Several others on the forum have used EBC with success as well. I did not replace the steel plates because they looked fine. I would...

Engine tick/tapping noise only taking off in gear

I've got something similar, sounds like a loose tappet but I suspect it's exhaust leak because I get an exhaust pop every once in a while. I haven't had the courage to take the exhaust off yet, I fear breaking the bolts.

Greetings and salutations from sunny, Detroit Michigan!

Hello from another Michigander, and welcome to the GSR! It's a fantastic resource full of good people. I look forward to seeing the progress on the bike. May I suggest you start a build thread in the projects section to track your progress and keep us entertained.

    crankcase vent mesh screen

I read the thread, although I must admit I only skimmed it. However, it seems your main concern is oil draining out of the airbox, rather than oil consumption. Maybe they go hand in hand? I burned a half quart in 430 miles which seems excessive. I don't have any oil leaks and don't notice any...

Your son's first bike is an MT07????? I'm very jealous, those are great bikes. I have several buddies with the 07, 09 and 10.

    Electrical cleaner

I can't speak to Brains KLR but I think you'd be surprised to know what type of water abuse machines can take and still be fine. When I was in high school I worked for a commercial lawn service and long story short, I ended up putting one of our 60" zero turns upside-down in a lake, fully...

    crankcase vent mesh screen

I don't mean to distract from the topic at hand, but if this mesh is missing can it cause excessive oil consumption? I've got a fair bit of oil in my airbox and I assume it's coming from the vent

Calling all 550 folks - Should I get it?

Well someone else wanted it too. He had it posted 1 day and it's gone. Oh well.

Calling all 550 folks - Should I get it?

You're a better man than I. I would offer $200 and be pretty firm at that. I've scored several deals doing that. Probably ruffled some feathers as well but in my opinion never hurts to ask. I'm also not afraid to walk away if I don't get a price I'm happy with. It would be a strictly for the...

Calling all 550 folks - Should I get it?

oof, good to know! That's the kind of info I was looking for. I might still take a look at it, but I'll keep this in mind. Seller hasn't responded to me yet so may not even get to look.

Calling all 550 folks - Should I get it?

That is different, I just took a look at the parts list and looks like there's quite a few parts still available, however the LH intake is not longer available. Can't find one anywhere online. So that'd be something I'd have to pay close attention to when looking at it. I may hook up the trailer...

Calling all 550 folks - Should I get it?

To be clear, I wouldn't be expecting a record profit. The 750 I flipped I only sold for $1300 so I'm not expecting to sell a bike for $5,000. The only reason I turned a profit was because I bought the bike so cheap ($200) and it didn't take too much to get running. But I thoroughly enjoyed...

Calling all 550 folks - Should I get it?

If any of you have followed me the last few years, you'll know I acquired several GS's very quickly, most of which were basket cases. It was too much too fast so I sold two of them as parts bikes, and the '77 750 I had I revived and got "road worthy." It needed a lot more work than what I could...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

Bit of an update. Last week on my way to work, I noticed my windshield was cracked. I thought I inspected it carefully after dropping the bike in my garage, but somehow I must have missed the huge crack... Oh well, I stop drilled the crack to prevent it from spreading. I also plan to glue/weld...

    Bad gas story

I'd check the clutch cable for proper adjustment first since that's easy. Are you using the correct oil? The wrong oil will cause the clutch to slip. As for the bogging issue, you said it happend while climbing a hill at high rpm. Between the steep incline cause fuel sit at a different angle...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

I looked at a few options like that, but with my heated grips I'm limited to what type of lock works. This one is easy on, easy off, affordable easy to use and well made. I think I'll be happy with it.

    SOME...Gas in oil?

As others have said, I personally wouldn't worry about it if the oil level hasn't gone up and the smell of gas in the oil is barely noticeable. As others have mentioned, there's always a little fuel in the oil. I have an old Lesco mower with a single cylinder kawasaki engine. It's an early 90s...
