A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Bar end mirrors ?

Yeah, I'm not sure which I have - I've had both - but mine are probably Emgo because they don't seem to hold up as well to the elements. Still, this pair has been on for about six year, work fine, look.......well......like the rest of my bike. I'd spend the extra cash if I had your bike, Joe...

    Bar end mirrors ?

Yes, get barend mirrors. If you can afford CRGs, they look very cool. I think I have Napoleons or maybe Emgos. Cheap and you don't see a bit of your shoulder.....and they make you look like you're actually serious about this motorcycle thing.

    kick 1000 ?

I had kick starters on several (well, all) of my British bikes. None came with electric starts. When Norton added the electric start in 1975 (mine was a ’71) I thought it was stupid. Kicking was part of the process, the crap associated with the electric start added 40 pounds AND it was Lucas...

Isaac trys to sell the beast

I think it’s sweet. As someone without the time or talents to get very experimental with a bike, I love looking at what folks are able to do with a little ingenuity. It's probably not what I would do, but I like it.

    Tourmaster Cortech GX Sport Tall

Wow, that is an absolutely perfect match, man. I wouldn't try to match a helmet, though - I think that'd be too much. A black one would be okay, but a white helmet would perfect the look. Nice jacket, but your bike has made it to my list of favorites here.

    4 into 1, who's best

The V&H retains access to the oil filter. I had a Kerker on before and got rid of it just because of the pain of removing the exhaust everytime the oil was changed. If you have an aftermarket oil cooler, changing the filter will be a huge, especially if you have big hands, but you can do it...

    Ch,CH,CH,CH Changes!

Because no one else seems to be addressing the obvious, I thought you should know that I'm quite certain I saw a Maverick in your driveway.

    Pics of "E"'s?

I keep coming back to this thread. I'm just amazed at the level of skill out there. I spent the usual two hours Friday changing my oil, cursing the evil 10mm acorn nuts and washers on my filter cover. If I change the oil, clean, adjust and lube the chain, wash very occasionally, I'm just...

    "Routine Maintenance"

Pretty close on that one. Plug always goes in the oilpan, socket doesn?t. I don?t use an extension. I slide the pan forward when changing the filter. I have an oil cooler behind V&H header, so I have the very tedious task of removing five acorn nuts and washers with a 10mm wrench. At least...

    Black Soot on Carbs

Ha!!! Impossible. When it comes to motorcycle mechanics, I've got very little smarts to insult. Really. After all these years, it's pathetic, but true. I know what the breather looks like, but I'm not sure what the crankcase filter would look like. I suppose it may be obvious to me when...

    Black Soot on Carbs

Breather?? Underneath the carbs. I've only had bikes for about 40 years now, so my mechanical aptitude is limited (it'd be nice for me to start doing something about that before I'm dead, eh?).

    Black Soot on Carbs

Carb question. I have K&Ns on an ?82 GS1100E. Recently, the #1 carb and air cleaner are getting dull black soot built up on the outside. From the pattern, it looks to be coming out of the pod and blowing across the carb. (I think.) Anyone got any suggestions?

    Vavle Adjustment

Have you ever adjusted valves before? I ask, because I avoid most mechanical endeavors - take the bike to shop and have for 35 or more years. I'm hoping to get bolder and adjust my valves fairly soon.

Fairing Options, advice & Pics please

The one shown in black is a very generic fairing sold under a few labels ? probably all made in the same Chinese molds. It costs about $50. You generally have to do some custom work for fasteners and the metal parts are prone to instant rust (particularly the windscreen screws). However, if...

    Tourmaster Deluxe Tail Bag

I've got it all too. And the tri-bag (which Jethro would hate). Geoff mounted his slightly further back than I and did not get the worn edges on his saddlebag from the shocks (next time I'll be smart too). I find that I can fit my REI two-man tent, sleeping bag, thermarest and a couple other...

I might try it this summer

Yes. A few years ago, I rode out to the Adirondacks in NY. Incredible once you get to the NY border and get off 90 onto 17, but from here all the way to Erie PA is dreadful, flat, ugly and boring. That's where mp3 players and earbuds are necessary.

I might try it this summer

In a previous job, used to talk to traffic engineers on a near-daily basis. Their views toward land use and development were nearly Neanderthal, but conversations about safety were pretty interesting. The average speed of traffic on the interstates in the state was 11 mph over the speed limit...

I might try it this summer

They just have a significantly lower number of crashes per VMT than other roads. In other words, they're safer because they're just safer. Controlled access, narrow range of speed, unidirectional, relatively straight, decent visibility.....there are a lot of reasons they're safer, but they...

I might try it this summer

It's hard to get much safer than an interstate, but if that's all I had, I probably wouldn't ride a motorcycle. This thread forced me to look up some Route 66 websites and books.

I might try it this summer

I rode some good distances on Route 66 in the '70s. I really just thought it was an old road in bad repair with a lot of dying structures along it. Frankly, I'd love to take a DRZ, several notepads and pens and a camera the length of it today. Unfortunately, I'm betting that book has been...
