A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

That would be a nope -- if you power them on without having them firmly glued to some sort of heat sink, they'll quickly overheat, turn black, and shrivel up.

    81 GS850G Gas in engine

Yup, it's the petcock. Very common. When the engine is full of oil/gas, it is possible for the mix to push through the seal separating the engine and gear oil. Personally, I would just run it and keep an eye on things. It'll probably be fine. Without that large volume of very thinned-out oil...

New Forum Member and Questions Regarding My "New" 83 GS850L

Ah, found it... Here's my torture test report on the Shinko 230 from the fall of 2012. Please note that the prices given are from many years ago, but the basic idea is about the same. And Avon stopped selling tires for our machines recently as well. Shinko 230 Torture Test - The GSResources...

New Forum Member and Questions Regarding My "New" 83 GS850L

Shinkos are made in Korea, and don't belong in the same sentence as the horrible Chinese brands you mention. Whole 'nuther country and level of quality there! Avon no longer makes tires for our machines. Since you have a 16" rear, Metzeler has some good options. Same goes for Dunlop's Elite. I...

New Forum Member and Questions Regarding My "New" 83 GS850L

Nice! Not enough '83s around here, ya know. I and a lot of folks I know are running the Shinko 230, or perhaps the 712 if you like the looks of that one better. I get about 3,000 miles out of them, normal people get 5K or more. Great tires for the money, made in Korea. I push them VERY hard...

    Clymer Or Haynes?

All the above, plus factory manual if you can find it, and of course a large dose of forum wisdom. All the manuals sort of suck but in different ways, so oftentimes you can sort of triangulate the issue by blending the scraps of information into a more or less intelligible whole.

    Valve cover gasket

And your Suzuki is...? Most GS models have flat paper-ish/cardboard-like gaskets. The rubber gaskets with the groove were a later invention. The OP is also being unnecessarily coy regarding their motorcycle. The best advice varies, but OEM is always best, and you can find NOS on eBay pretty...

    GS550et 1980 brake shims ?

I'd wager that half, or probably many more, of these shims have vanished with the passage of time and the tender attentions (and inattentions) of decades of thumbfingered mechanics and accursed POs. And honestly, the brakes will work just fine without the shims. Most of the time you don't get...

    Oversize piston rings

Yup, you need the matching OS pistons. Availability can be a problem; it has become very difficult to order these parts from Suzuki. Cruznimage has OS sets, though.

    New member, Hello from Indiana!

As far as a headlight, you won't find anything used worth a hoot; these things seem to be fragile as eggs, with parts that vanish between dimensions as soon as they are removed from a motorcycle, and sometimes before. What you want is the second item on this page (chrome Kawasaki replica...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

Z1 seems to sell EBC springs, not Suzuki OEM...? I couldn't tell you whether EBC springs specifically have the same problem with being way too strong; I don't remember the brands of the ones I've seen. OEM springs are only $4.23 each at my usual bits dealer... they're used on tons of different...

Apologies for the up-close bug and off-road crusties and the fact that this is the...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

FWIW, those aftermarket springs are ridiculously heavy... A fresh set of stock springs retains the light clutch pull without slipping. Some folks have also used three stock springs and three aftermarket springs. And yup, Suzuki got the ergos, seats, and frame geometry so amazingly perfect on...

    Exhausts compatible with 83 GS850G?

I've discovered a hole in the exhaust header on my 1983 GS850G, and it appears that this model is the only one where the center pipes are a unit with the resonator. I suspect finding this part is going to be extraordinarily difficult, so I'll likely need to replace the whole system. Can anyone...
