If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Front Wheel Bearing

I think my front wheel bearings are making a noise. It sounded at first like a binding speedo cable. I oiled up both the tach and speedo cables but it didn't help. I just spent the past week on the road. 2200 miles. The tach cable crapped out during the trip but the noise never changed. I...

How hot can these bikes get?

Well I changed the oil today. First warmed it up with a 10 mile ride. Let it sit for 15 minutes and dumped it. The oil poured out like water. I've changed oil hot before and it always still flowed out with some viscosity. This literally splashed out like water. It doesn't smell like gas or...

What type of motor oil should I use?

Ditto on the Castrol GTX. I've sworn by it for years. 10W-40 mostly. 20W-50 in the heat of summer.

    Stupid Question needing correct anwser.

A little over 4 quarts with filter. I usually get it to the high point on the site glass. After it starts and fills the filter it's about right.

How hot can these bikes get?

Wow... Thanks for all the advice, comments, support, jokes........ Sorry I caused so much trouble with this thread but I have to say I'm glad to see the amount of interest. It's not that I'm paranoid about the heat. Many have agreed with you guys that I'm overreacting but the difference is that...

How hot can these bikes get?

I rebuilt the upper of my 82 gs1100gl this past winter. When I first got it running again I seemed to feel the heads getting much hotter than normal. A mechanic I know checked over what I had done, adjusted the valves and synced the carbs. All in all the bike is running well but the heads get...

HELP!!!! Oil leak and rally 3 days away!

I went through the same thing with my 82 gs1100 a couple years back. A similiar hole but same idea. It is a vent hole. Changing mystarted O-ring didn't help in my case. Mine would only leak during a highway run. To make a long story short, it turned out to be my trans gear oil was over filled...

82 gs1100gl rebuild results.. not the best

The engine was still pretty warm especially because it had ran so hot. It was shut down for awhile though. The plugs didn't burn me. The other cylinders were 100+ though. I've been thinking the valves should be adjusted. I was having trouble checking the clearances and since I didn't have a shim...

82 gs1100gl rebuild results.. not the best

Thanks for all the help regarding the timing issues etc. That all worked out fine. The bike fired up well. Idled great after a couple minutes. But quickly started to feel very very hot. The head, block, cam cover.... You couldn't go near it. As if it wasn't getting any oil. Turned it off for...

    dumb question!

I don't think the petcock should have been left in the prime position while you were trailing it home. I think gas can make it's way into the crankcase if it's left on prime. Eddie V

82 gs1100 gl cam timing, 8 valve engine

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure those notches are positioned facing each other. I'll be back out working on it tonight. Even though I still have to change it because I'm off by one tooth on the # 1 mark. Something moved once I tightened down the cams. Chef, I'm not sure what you mean by the...

    Cleaning hands

I like the Goop hand cleaner. The trick is not to use it with any water. After rubbing it all over and liquifying all the grease, wipe hands with dry paper towels. Then you can wash your hands as normal.

82 gs1100 gl cam timing, 8 valve engine

Thanks for that info chef. I'll give that a try. Would you have any insight as to my first question? The timing marks for cyl 1,4 TDC come around twice for each cam revolution. I've determined that I'm timing it on the beginning of the power stroke as opposed to the beginning of the intake...

82 gs1100 gl cam timing, 8 valve engine

Hi and thanks for all the previous help. I've been getting close to completion on my reassembly and double checked the cam timing before buttoning up the cover. I realized that with the crankshaft on the correct timing mark. (corresponding to TDC on cylinder 4), the cams can be in one of two...

    Valve cover install help please

I'm in process of rebuilding my gs1100 and will be putting the upper back together soon. I've come across a part that I don't remember taking off that sounds similiar. It's seems to be a rectangular plastic cam chain guide. I can't remember if this came off before or after the cams but the...

    Assembly Lube ???

Hi to all and thanks for all the past help. I am in process of rebuilding my 82 gs1100gl. I remember replacing a cam on a car once and the shop had recommended Molybendum lube which I gooped up all over the cam before installing it. When I recently asked my auto parts store about it they...

Are bike horns different than car horns?

I had the same results when I replaced mine with one from an auto parts store. I thought the horn might be bad so I tested it by connecting it directly to my car battery. It almost blasted my head off. I mean it was one of these real loud obnoxious sounding horns. The conclusion I came to was...

Mine front end would shake side to side eratically when I let go. It turned out to be the front tire. After that was changed it would be fine with no hands. Eddie V

    Gasket Replacements

Hi to all and thanks for all the prior advice. I am in the middle of a rebuild on an 82 gs1100gl. I like to know what you guys would recommend to put on gaskets before installing if anything. I've had a tough time cleaning off all the old gasket residue trying my best to not gouge the surfaces...
