A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The Michio Zombie: My 1979 GS850G

I love motorcycles. Even though I'm a motorhead, there is no cooler machine. But I've never owned a classic, Japanese bike. Until now. Meet: the Michio Zombie, a 1979 GS850G resurrected from the dead. It started with a Craigslist ad with this picture: A non-running, but garaged for the last...

Gas Cap and Seat Lock Tumblers/Keys

Mornin' GSR, I did a search and found the gent on this forum that re-keys various GS tumblers (Kiwi Canuck), but he's not responding to my PM after about a week. Anyone else out there re-key and re-tumble these locks? I've got a '79 GS850G that the PO jammed a flathead in the gas cap and...

How to Modify Steering Stops for Aftermarket Bars?

Mornin' GSR, I did a google search but.... I've got a 79 GS850 that is finally running well enough to start worrying about the aesthetics/details. Somewhere along the line, someone installed aftermarket bars and didn't correctly modify the steering stops so the bars slap the tank at full-lock...

Dyna 2000 Install Help on my 1979 GS850G

Not racing! Just got a good deal on this and am hoping for a reliable, modern ignition system on what I hope will be a fun daily rider/weekend tourer. Thanks once again for the help everyone. I'll heat shrink the tach connections, hook up the sparkys and be done with it. Valve shims get in...

Dyna 2000 Install Help on my 1979 GS850G

Further reading is indicating I can connect the yellow tach wire to the negative post on one of the coils. I'm assuming that's the white or blue on one coil or the other? Still need help on the coil firing order, too. Thanks again!

Dyna 2000 Install Help on my 1979 GS850G

Hi GSR, I found a deal on a used Dyna 2000 ignition system with Dyna coils from a member here. I've successfully installed it on my 79 GS850G with the exception of these last two steps. 1). I 'm not finding any info on an electronic tach input for this bike (or whether that's even necessary...

Paint airbox and battery box or leave them rusting OEM?

Thanks for the tips, guys. Hit them with some Rustoleum Satin black. They look great. Bike should be up and running this time next week for the first time in years.

Paint airbox and battery box or leave them rusting OEM?

Nope! haha. Not painting the plastic anything!! I've never had plastic painting turn out satisfactory and if it does, it doesn't last long. I was talking about the steel airbox that houses the filter and the carb boots. Mine doesn't look super awesome. The battery box is worse. There's also...

Paint airbox and battery box or leave them rusting OEM?

My new-to-me 79 GS850 looks ok, but the airbox and battery box are out of the bike right now as I'm thoroughly going through it after the PO had it stored and not running for years. While I wait for parts (valve shims, carb o-rings, gaskets, throttle cables, etc), I was thinking about painting...

    Source for new seat pan?

Looks like the site doesn't have a seat specific to the '79 850. Are the seats, namely the pan, on the 750 and/or 1000 the same? Thanks!

    Source for new seat pan?

Hi, I just purchased a 1979 GS850G and am doing a thorough but budget-minded restoration. One obvious thing that needs attention is the seat. I've recovered seats in the past, so I thought, "no big deal" but didn't realize how rusted the original seat pan is. I've searched, but can't seem to...
