A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Unblocking passageways

What is this crud made of? I have tried solvents and it doesn't touch it even cleaning solutions in the ultrasonic won't budge it. I've tried getting Berryman's that is so widely recommended here but it isn't available in UK. I suspect that it has to be an acid solution, vinegar or phosphoric...

MOT legalities (uk) for 40yr old bikes since registration

This is correct, unless it's redefined as 'Historic' then it must be taxed and MOT'd as usual. Also I'm sure you know this already, but to be sure.. If you do not tax and mot even though it's free, and don't SORN it, you will receive hate mail in the form of a fixed penalty. So the procedure...

    Gasket manufacture .....

There's sun in UK? Just how big is this magnifying glass? You could press the gasket material against the place where you want the gasket out and tap it out like Wally says or just press it hard so that the paper is imprinted and cut it with a steady hand like Adrian says. A little gasket like...

Robert is very helpful, I've bought many kits from him he sends them in very good time with helpful diagrams of which o' ring goes where.

What compression do you get on your GS ?

A puff at start up is leaky stems seals. Possibly, but unlikely guides as well. I couldn't find the seals that i liked in the UK so I brought this kind from the States, (They have all the good stuff there)...

What compression do you get on your GS ?

Your compression test says rings are ok, adding oil made a little difference. I would say it's your guide seals that are seeping oil. Does it puff a little blue smoke on start up after standing for a while? or slightly on overrun? Get a mate to ride behind you and look.

GS550E 1980 engine leak Crankcase or where ?

That amount of oil, are you sure it isn't valve stem seals?, If you're going to open and do the gaskets refit with viton kind, ebay. I get mine from a supplier in the US, he does one that looks very similar to OEM with a metal sleeve all around. You can get from SPS (suzuki Performance Spares...

What compression do you get on your GS ?

Those numbers look pretty good to me, engine should be hot with throttle wide open. But if you do decide to deal with the base gasket leak just stick in some new rings while you're at it. I used to gather them a bit at a time from ebay as OEM are a mad cost, now I just order from cruzin image...

    Base gasket #^%$##

There's a flat spot on the crankcase and a matching one on the cylinder block at each end, find a 6mm bolt or cut one to length and put a nut on it put it on the flat spot and unwind the nut it will break the gasket free and the rest is easy, move it to the other side if necessary, but I've...

    Random Photo thread

Just looked at this thread a couple of days back. I have a random photo it's one I took a about three years back. I was standing on the back deck of a ship in the Kara Sea way up North just happened to have a camera in my hand and saw these flashes on the horizon. I knew that were no other...

    Ring compressor

There's a pair of handles that attach to those ribbed bands, they go around the piston and the handles squeeze together like a pair of pliers and compresses the rings, there used to be two sets of these to do each pair of pistons. They had Blue handles and were very good at doing the job. If...

Steel hose in oil cap, thoughts?

Thinking about this, how do you measure to a figure like negative 3br? I understood that once a vacuum is achieved that's it there would be nothing left to measure and that would be zero. I imagine that the rings suffer because the vacuum lowers the boiling temperature point so that the...

Scrambler build - looking to increase clearance - question on forks/ springs

This was a bit of fun, revived over the lockdown period from a crusty corroded road bike, it's a '79 1000 purchased as a breaker ten years ago and left under bush but we don't break them anymore these days...As far as i know it hasn't run since '97. Fork tubes are standard L and rear shocks YSS...

Lethal memory fail: Why drivers see, and then forget, motorcyclists.

I've found the same, when I'm on the blue/white S drivers glance and I think they see a police bike, drivers are much more considerate, not the same at all if I'm on my titchy A100.

    travel oil container

Fix the leak before you go, these things will only ever get worse. Aluminium is not very chafe resistant and something square shaped is always preferable. Maybe one of those old ww2 American type water bottles? Much thicker ally Finding places to tie stuff to is always a challenge, you still...
