A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What is considered acceptable voltage at coils during start?

My 82 GS550L has trouble starting and I've eliminated most non-electrical issues. When diagnosing this problem I used a spark plug resting on the motor to see the quality of the spark. I found that while I am using the starter the spark is weak. But once I let go of the starter button the...

    Glueing base gasket to cylinder

Just did this on the 550. If the rip is on the egg shaped portion around the oil channels I would toss the gasket. If the rip is anywhere else I would apply a little sealer over the rip and use the gasket. Also I always apply a coating of sealer (black) on the egg shaped portion, both sides...

    Cam timing never perfect

So this is on the 82 gs550L I'm putting on cams and the procedure is fairly simple. Line up the T 1-4 mark. Take slack out of the chain. Arrow 2 on exhaust cam points up. Arrow 1 points parallel to head surface. 20 pins over to intake arrow 3. She's lined up. The problem is that after...

    Head Gasket differences

Question on the cylinder o-rings: is the intent to prevent oil from soaking up into some adhesion layer between the cylinder sleeve and the aluminum block? I know the sleeve is clamped from the top and is not going anywhere.

82 GS550: Bottom rings always a little wider at the gap

They spec out fine. At the upper end of std measure but well below service limit. I'm just worried the rings got somehow warped when I install them. They seem ok with the exception of the uncompressed end gap being a touch wide.

82 GS550: Bottom rings always a little wider at the gap

I picked up a set of cylinders and pistons to refresh my GS550. According to the manual the uncompressed rings should have about 1/4 inch end gap when not compressed. And the upper ones on all pistons do. But the lower ones are a few hundredths wider. I tried removing them and compressing them a...

    I've got the itch

Latest update is that I woke up Saturday morning with the flu and its been two weeks of fever and coughing. I'm just starting to feel well enough to consider going again.

    I've got the itch

Should be a one day trip. 250 miles or so. I have plans to spend the week and come back on Saturday. Hey if anyone wants to grab a beer let me know.

    I've got the itch

I've got my micro-tourer ready to roll. First trip will be down to NYC for some urban camping (couching) with friends and relatives. This is a GW250 so it will be interesting to see how it does. I'm planning a route that will take me away from the interstates and I'll be doing it on a Sunday so...

    I've got the itch

Got this book for Christmas. It's actually out of print but my wife found it used. I like the writing so far, although I look forward when he starts talking more about the trip than his politics (which occupies a bit too much of the first 20 pages). The gw250 is slow. But its also big. It's the...

Do the fork bushes wear out?

The front end feels a little weird on the 550 in recent months and I'm wondering if I need to replace the fork oil and maybe do something more for it. I read that they recommend I replace the copper bushes. Is this an easy job? I know I'll probably need to replace the oil seals as well. But the...

    I've got the itch

Sandy, that's a great post. Six weeks! Wow. I broached the subject with the wife and it did not get summarily executed. Mentioned that it would make a great 50th birthday present for me. She did look a little taken back when I said that I would be going solo. Made me reconsider. The problem is...

    I've got the itch

I'm thinking of putting side cases on the gw250 and using that. I know it's crazy. A 250! But for the roads I am thinking about it should be ok. I've been riding it for a year and I think it will do the job. I will be installing a waterproof USB charging outlet on it. I have a 2 man dome tent...

    I've got the itch

No not that itch.. The itch to do some long rides. A friend at work just came back from a ride out to San Diego. I was really jealous. Last year he finally got his kid to move out so now he is relatively a free man. My kids are 14 and 16. But I've got my 50th birthday coming up next year and...

    Bad starter?

So I rebuilt the starter using a kit from Steve's link. The kits include brush plate, bearings and seals. In the end it was too much work to replace everything and the new brush plate was a pain to install so I just replaced the seals (which were bad) and the positive brush. The result is the...

    Bad starter?

Already there :) Stator cover did NOT need to come off. Starter pops out nice and easy. It is the 2 brush style and it definitely needed new oil seals and the + brush was worn down to a nub. So I'm giving the rebuild kit a try.

    Bad starter?

Yep. So to remove the starter, do I pull off the stator cover? Can I pry it out without removing the cover?
