DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    anyone from the chopper days?

Built this with a stick welder only, 28 tears ago. It's still here. Bored to 708cc, currently getting a custom electronic ignition (my boy is a machinist). Forks are 750 Honda, 6" over. I spent 250 bucks starting with a stock 1973 TX650 Yamaha.

Lucas oil additive for thee but not for me?

I don't know about the Lucas and wet clutch, but when I was a newbie I added STP to my 1100. The motor would flat run away from the clutch on a hard pull and several oil changes still didn't take care of it. I had to pull the clutch plates and wash them down thoroughly to get it all off.

    Caltric stator fail

The culprit is most likely the little metal clip that holds the wiring harness down out of the way at the bottom of the chamber. It sits very close to the things and is easy to not get just right.

Forking by Frank. A motorcycling legend.

    The turd

There are days when I hate you. I wish I had your patience and work ethic in my old age. Jealousy is an ugly thing to have to live with.

    anyone from the chopper days?

I was there. I built an XS650 hardtail for my 16 year old son, it's still here. My nephew & I built a 750 Triumph twin. It was really common to find stock bikes with extended forks. Springers were a big deal, the coolest ones had the twisted steel look. 750 Hondas, mostly, and the occasional 900...

    Thoughts on 79 XS1100

The XS1100 was the bike that coined the term "hyperbike". It was the 1st of the modern superbikes. Honda, Suzuki, and Kaw were right behing them. Things were ramping up.

    Before I start clutch work....

Under advise from I can't remember who, I bought a set of aftermarket heavy duty springs, and used 1/2 of them. There are 6, and I replaced every other spring. No heavy clutch pull, no slippage, must be 5 years, now. The other three are still in my toolbox.

    why no self canceling signals?

I had a new XS650 Yamaha in 1980 and they were self cancelling, I think 10 seconds or 100 yards. Other Yamahas had them several years earlier, maybe 1976? Both my early Viragos had them.

    Can anyone identify this part?

I'm not taking mine off to look, but I think my 850 cover looked like that.

Thoughts on using long air runners in place of pod filters

My 850 is running really well in all RPM ranges with foam pods. My one and only complaint is that crosswinds can mess with it some. I'm planning on fabbing some shields for the sides this year to play with that issue. It's not bad, so it can only get better.

    High RPM

If you are turning left, push on the left side of the bar. That, on 4 wheels, would make a right turn, but you are on a single line. Your bike will try to fall over and will turn left, held up by the forward momentum. Push on the left to turn left, and on the right to turn right. Leaning your...

Freeing frozen valve cover bolt with a welded nut...

I think it broke the 2nd time because it's still corroded tight. There are some chemicals that work fairly well to help this out. I am a gambler so I generally push the limit on heat application as that's where I get the best results.

Procedure after crankcase full of gas????

So, you ran it a tad with gas in the oil? Sir, you have given your engine a good flushing!:D I've flooded my crankcase a couple of times over the years. It's really clean in there and no harm has ever shown up. Just change the oil out properly.

    come on mac (or seller)

I would ALWAYS go to studs if taking bolts out. A screwed up bolt hole is a real possibility after a few off & ons. Studs I can just break loose & retighten once every few years so the don't get frozen up in there

Where to get paint for a 1982 GS1100E Gold?

I had a champagne 82. Never could figure out how to see any gold color on it.:indecisiveness:
  20. W

Are GS1100E bikes more common than GS1100G bikes?

I don't know about everywhere, but I ride my 850 shafty a lot, and I see just as many or more shafties than chain drives. But I generally stay within 400 miles of home in SE Iowa. Maybe riding styles leave the shafties with more survivors?
