A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

solenoid clicking, starter not turning over.

If you jump straight across the solenoid between the 2 large posts you have taken the solenoid out of the equation. If it cranks like that OK then I agree, solenoid. Real cheap on ebay.

I never liked the prominant radiator

It was a Magna, the Sabres looked better to me. The GT750 radiator doesn't look that bad, somehow.

I'm in trouble with this one

I was under the impression that the bike would kill if you left the sidestand down while dropping it in gear, and I also thought that was normal as it's done on other bikes. On anything this old that isn't pristine, I am a minimalist at heart anyway. I don't like gear shift indicators & such. If...

I never liked the prominant radiator

But I saw an early 80's V-45 Honda this morning that looked like it was made last night. Somebody took care of it.

If that's a 2 up bike, your wife is far smaller than mine....:p

I'm in trouble with this one

Update: I started pulling things apart in the fusebox area, and found the fusebox has a both a + and a- port at the bottom of it. Both had screws in them but no wires. Nothing anywhere looking like a ground wire, strangely, so I made one. Now everything works, still don't know what the + side is...

I'm in trouble with this one

I don't know about the mechanical advancer, that ignitor is found by the battery, tho.

I'm in trouble with this one

All my GS bikes were Dyna ignition. This one is stock. 1983 GS1100. Ran (it did) when parked, It sat for 2-3 years. I had the carbs rebuilt, lined the tank, new battery. I have juice to the coils and no spark. Just from sitting? There is also a hot wire with a ring stakon near the battery with...

Need help reinstalling stator cover (starter gear) GS1100ES

I just used a few spots of super glue at various points around the gasket. Never had any problem.

Any opinion on rebuilding a starter?

Turned out to be a 2 brush starter, piece of cake to rebuild. One of the coil springs that tension the brushes had broken. Cost me a whole 22 bucks for a brush kit, my dealer had several old starters laying around so we just robbed a set of springs out of a Honda starter. After this experience...

Any opinion on rebuilding a starter?

Guess I better pull it off & open it up. There is a 4 brush kit I saw on ebay for 16 bucks.

But a wood screw into the engine block?!? Is it even possible to be so stupid? Yes

Any opinion on rebuilding a starter?

My 850 starter gave it up after 37 years. I see rebuild kits pretty cheap. Should I bother or just look for a replacement?

    Craigslist "funnies"

One would think this must be a sick joke... https://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-suzuki-gs-850-gs850-s16-starter-cover/292113994798?hash=item440359d42e:g:S3EAAOxyfyhRYmNS:sc:USPSFirstClass!52649!US!-1

    Gs parts interchangability

That odd loop on the stator is a no-no these days. Most, including me, run it straight to the R/R with the other 2. After that I don't know what to tell you if the rest is new.

Does the GS discussion forum .... include the Suzuki GR650 twin bike ... or where?

I'm told there are some differences, including the word strange. Mostly drivetrain stuff as in the clutch/flywheel areas, I believe. I don't know of any specific problems, but don't think they sold many. I kinda liked them. They were Suzuki's answer to the venerable XS 650 Yamaha. Smoother...

    Gs parts interchangability

These are a pretty simple setup, actually. 3 stator wires direct to the R/R, a hot & a ground off the R/R. That's it. When mine refused to work with all new parts, it turned out that the hot wire from the R/R had to go straight to the battery, and all was well. I hooked it up to the battery post...

    Craigslist "funnies"

That could actually be worth a little if there is a decent rear end under there. Some of those can cost. You'd have to be looking past the rest.

    Well this sucks

Well, I finished the wiring. I sent the R/R hotwire to the battery side of the solenoid, soldered the ends nicely. Got 14.4 at a couple thousand RPMs, and I'll take that all day long.

    Well this sucks

Nothing got even slightly warm in the fusebox, which I don't understand. My dealer had warned me to look for anything getting warm. I figured it out with the thought that the GM alternators I have played with go straight to the battery. No fuse, either, but I can easily add a fuse holder to that...
