A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If i sitck my fuel line in a gas can...

Because enough people will pay $45 for one. I used about $3 in hose fittings from Lowes, some old fuel line I had laying around, and a gas can. Some Saran Wrap and duct tape to seal the connections, and I was set to go.

    Laser Chain Alignment

I saw a link to a laser tool for chain alignment on another forum recently. I thought it was a neat idea, but not worth the $180 they wanted for it. But it got me thinking, and today when I put new tires on the bike, I got out the cheap laser level I got a couple years ago. It has pins you press...

    more on bleeding brakes

I have a Mity-Vac and still had a hard time gettting the last couple of bubbles out of the MC/banjo-bolt area. What I ended up doing was putting one of the nozzles from the Mity-Vac on and sticking it down into the hole at the bottom of the reservoir, applying a little vacuum, and juggling the...

    Regulator/rectifier, stator question

I believe the 78 has separate regulator and rectifier. The problems are with the combination regulator/rectifier units in the 1980 and later models. I could be mistaken on this, but that's what I seem to remember.

    Basic maintenance upon new purchase?

If you don't already have some, get dielectric grease. I bought some at either Murray's or Autozone (CRS is acting up today). Whenever you're working on some part of the bike, disconnect, clean, apply the dielectric grease to the connectors, and reassemble the plugs in the area you're working...

    Emgo air filter VS. OEM??

It's been over 10 years since I got the thing. I wouldn't be surprised if they either put that one in the wrong box, or modified it after getting complaints from customers. I may try them again sometime, but not on mailorder.

    Emgo air filter VS. OEM??

I bought an Emgo filter for my 82 1100E. Never installed it. It was open on both ends, unlike the stock filter, & I never got around to fabricating a piece to cover the end and hold the filter in place.

Neat Article: Why Auto Oils are just as good as Motorcycle Oils

When synthetics first came out there were a few brands that used a base stock that wasn't oil soluble. They soon realized that being stranded because your vehicle was low on oil, and you couldn't top off with anything but certain brands, wasn't really the way to attact customers to their product.

    Clutch Questions - 1980 GS1100E

My 82 1100E had close to 60,000 miles on it when the engine stopped. The clutch was fine. I know people who wore out clutches in 10,000 - 15,000 miles. The only thing on a bike with more variability in length of service than clutches are tires.

    Heli-coil

I've bought Heili-Coil kits in two sizes, one for the exhaust flange bolts, and one for the valve cover bolts. Each kit was between $40-50. I got the first one at a machine tool supply shop, and the second one here; http://www.mcmaster.com/ It was a different brand name than Heli-Coil, but...

Front brake not illuminating brake light

If you want to replace the switch, try Partsnmore https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=gs&category=electrical I bought one and think it is better designed than the original. It's made so the metal contact piece and the spring stay in the piece that slides, making it a lot easier to...

Front brake not illuminating brake light

While you're at it, follow the wires for the switch to the headlight bucket. Check the connections in there. I bought a can of dielectric grease and any time I deal with the electrical system, even if it's just to move wiring out of the way for other work, I take apart all connections, clean...

    Windshield

Slipstreamer probably has the widest variety of windshields. http://www.slipstreamer.com/index.html Try Dennis Kirk for some other makes, or to order a Slipstreamer. The biggest decision you'll make is how much protection you want/need. I've cut down about a third of the different...

    Need Help - 1980 GS1100E - Bars & Light

If you remove the headlight housing the back of the instrument panel will be exposed to the elements. It isn't reallly a problem on my 80 750E because I have a Quicksilver fairing to help keep water out. If you change the headlight, you'll need to address this issue. For the seat, you should be...

muffler slip-on: where do I cut?

If you get one of the Supertrapp slip-ons, you should be able adjust the number of disks to closely duplicate the flow of the stock muffler and retain the stock jetting. I was checking this option out, as I noticed I will probably have to replace my exhaust after this year. On my 1980 GS750, the...

    Cylinder Head Gasket $$$

I'm currently replacing the head gasket on my 750. It was cheaper for me to buy a complete gasket set than to buy a head gasket and valve cover gasket. And since I have the parts, I replaced the valve stem seals while the head was off.

    need encouragement about rebuild

It takes me twice as long to do most jobs, because I know I'm just good enough a mechanic to 1. realize how much money I can save, and 2. get in a little over my head. I take my time, double check EVERYTHING I do, and if something is giving me trouble, I take a break. I'd rather add an extra day...
