I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    81 GS650L Tach Jumpy, Low?

I have finally finished my electrical mods with the coil relay and replacement of the R/R unit and took the bike out for a test ride. It was running really well and my initial ride around the neighborhood turned into a 40 mile ride... The only thing that was off a bit was the tachometer...

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

First to confirm the R/R is not connected to the stator when performing any of these tests on the stator. I found a test on another site today, http://cycleelectricinc.com/Diegnosing%20Alternators.htm, that I would like hear what you think of the validity. It is the section on testing for...

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

Tom, Having the same bike, have you performed the stator tests? 0 volts on the lead to ground test? Thanks, Dave Side-note: I do have a good ratcheting crimper with dies for red, blue, and yellow connectors for $30. It works very well. Spent my high school and college summers working at a...

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

Thanks. I see what you are saying. I did not expect anything different in the final test when the first 3 were ok. The last test is not something that is in the service manual and I am not too knowledgeable in this subject. (civil engineer with on circuits class way back in school). More...

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

I do not understand the "so much for using an ohmmeter". The test said to use AC Voltage with 100 V range. My multi-meter is auto-sensing. Resistance tests in earlier steps did not show a problem.

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

OK, Phase B: Resistance between stator leads: Y-G: 0.5-0.7 ohms Y-B: 0.6-0.7 ohms B-G: 0.6-0.7 ohms Resistance between leads and engine case: All 0.L Lead to Lead AC current: All 89 volts +/- (manual, 80+ volts at 5,000 RPM) The last test was AC from the stator leads to the negative...

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

All original equipment. I just picked up this bike a couple of years ago. 26,000 miles on it. Just looked at the 650 service manual spec. Charging output should be 14-15.5 volts at 5,000 RPM, so I am just a bit low of the range. Dave

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

Took a look again this morning and started with running a new negative wire directly from the R/R to the negative battery terminal. Biggest change was the idle voltage?? 3. Idle: 14.2 volts (was 13.3). 4. 2,500 RPM: 13.8 volts (same). 5. 5,000 RPM: 13.9 volts (was 13.8). 6. Key-off: 13.2 volts...

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

I believe that I did what was suggested in another post to wire the stator directly to the R/R bypassing the wiring harness. I did not add any new wire, just eliminated existing spade and bullet connectors. The negative from the R/R had wire added to reach the negative battery terminal. Y...

    81 GS650L - Charging Voltage at 5,000 RPM?

    I started a thread earlier where I posted the results of my quick charging system test. The results weren't too good: 1. Key-off: 12.9 volts. 2. Key-on 10 seconds w/lights: 12.3 volts. 3. Idle: 13.3+. 4. 2,500 RPM: dropped to 12.9 volts. 5. 5,000 RPM: dropped to 13.2 volts. 6. Key-off: 13.2...

    Charging System Quick Test Advice

Back to our regularly scheduled program. Had a few minutes today to start tracing the wires. Before I start cutting things apart, was hoping for confirmation that I am in the correct spot. Charging System Quick Test Advice

Thanks. A little more guidance needed. From the wiring diagram, I have three wires coming from the stator. Yellow, Blue/White, and Green/White which I believe are exiting the engine through the starter cover as a bundle. Each of these wires needs to be traced back to the rectifier and replaced...

    Charging System Quick Test Advice

I just ran the quick test and would like to get advise on where to look next as the results weren't quite in the proper ranges and maybe even going in the wrong direction. 1981 GS650L. Battery was just taken of the battery tender where it was all winter and installed in the bike. Multi-meter...

81 GS650L Seat Cover Lock Eyelet

While it took me a year to get back around to this seat cover, I wanted to close the loop on the grommet issue. I did obtain the curtain rod grommets as linked above by bwringer. They worked well.

Thanks for the Amazon link. That item seems to have potential. I was getting closer too once I learned the sizing nomenclature for the grommets with #8 equal to 1" ID. Here is the one that I thought best so far...
