A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Bench sync vm26 tip...

Sorry, but your tip is incorrect. (Fully closed position, in preparation to manually adjust the throttle valves) Factory manual says to introduce a clearance between the throttle stop screw and the pulley. It's difficult enough to see any difference in slide height with the slides in their...

Needle Jets need to match Needes?

Sam, I'm off on a vacation for the next week or so, just so you know. Sounds like Chuck can help you out if you need it. Good luck with it!

Needle Jets need to match Needes?

Chuck, I visited Mikuni Corp in California in 1980 to ask some questions. During my conversation the Mikuni rep' said all of their jets (back then) were in 2.5 increments, with 2.5 and 7.5 representing a "step" and whole numbers as a "full" size. I often heard the term "half size" used instead...

Needle Jets need to match Needes?

I'm not going to "argue" about jetting suggestions.:) If Chuck says 112.5 mains work for him and 1 position richer on the needles is all you need to compensate for a quality pipe and pods, then that's what he's found. I don't believe 2 full sizes richer is enough for your mod's. At least I've...

    Idle mixture question

"Rubber intake pipes" I assume, means the carb manifolds (between the engine and carb). If you found one was cracking, I'd question the condition of the other 3, assuming they're all the same age? Intake leaks will make carb tuning impossible. You have to be positive of no intake leaks first...

Needle Jets need to match Needes?

I cannot be sure, but my memory is the 5DL36-2 jet needles are the most common for the 750's. I helped jet a couple of 750's many years ago and I believe those were the needles and the mains were 102.5. The 1000, same VM26 carbs, uses the same needles. The "-2" in 5DL36-2 means the e-clip is in...

Here is someithing i have never seen before

The float bowl vent lines are supposed to be routed under the seat where the air is more still. Float bowls, just like the gas tank, need to be vented to allow good fuel flow. Crosswinds can create fuel starvation if the vent lines are in the open. They should be removed when you run quality...

Here is someithing i have never seen before

As my first reply said, varnished gas doesn't have a true gas odor, at least to my nose. Your term "smells like skunk" would fit. And syrupy, varnished gas does feel slippery, like oil, just a little redder. So I doubt you have a problem, other than only finding time once a week for your baby.:(

Needle Jets need to match Needes?

As others said, you only need to adjust or change the jet needles. The needle jets are fine if they're factory. As for the new jet needles you bought, if they're obviously more narrow than the stockers, then you could have problems jetting the bike. You say you ordered 4 stock needles from the...

Here is someithing i have never seen before

I don't see how oil could be in the carbs vent lines. I've seen drops of gas that have been open to the air and form a "varnished", dark, syrupy liquid. It can feel just like oil, look similar (usually redder) and often won't have a true gas odor. Maybe some kind of condensation thing going on...

Thanks for sharing the pic's!:) Sam: 1.5 quarts of oil for about 750 miles?

    Plug Color Vs. AFR

The reason the larger pilot jets "didn't make much of a difference" to fix your lean spot at 1/4 throttle, is because the pilot jets (pilot circuit) is not designed to effect the carburetion at 1/4 throttle position. That's the job of the jet needle/needle jet circuit. There is some overlap...

    Plug Color Vs. AFR

Just a note about your jetting. The 17.5 pilot jets should be replaced with the stock 15. The 4-1 exhaust won't have a significant effect on the pilot circuit jetting when you still run the stock intake. The 17.5 jets will make it run richer and build up carbon, especially with low compression...

    2,000 Mile roadtrip on my '81 GS850G

Can't offer any trip info as I'm unfamiliar with that part of the country. Sounds like a great trip you have planned. I hope you've double checked everything so the bike is ready. Only advice I have is to take it easy and soak it all in. Don't rush and ride too many miles a day. Also, be SURE...

The 1250 "Bandit" no longer being made? Any other suggestions?

So do the cams need to be removed to adjust valve clearances? I've never thought of owning a Triumph. I assume the T-120 has ergo's similar to the GS? When it comes to smoothness at around 75 mph and overall power, how does it compare to a good running 40 year old GS1000? How are the electrics...

The 1250 "Bandit" no longer being made? Any other suggestions?

I appreciate the replies. Much more than I expected. A lot of you like the smaller bikes but I can't imagine riding anything under a 750 to do several hundred miles on the interstate. My GS has no problem with that but I'd like to keep the miles down and keep her "semi-retired". If I do buy a...

The 1250 "Bandit" no longer being made? Any other suggestions?

Been doing a little shopping to find what will probably be my last bike. I'm putting more emphasis on how easy the bike will be to work on since I really don't want to deal with mechanics anymore. I like the new Kawasaki retro 900's, the Suzuki GSXS1000, the Honda Interceptor and the Yamaha FZ9...

    main jet wrong size?

Sounds to me like the clutch is slipping. I don't know what you mean by "hiccup" but if it "accelerates rapidly" and "revs to red line", then both of those suggest the main jets are fine. A lack of fuel would decrease acceleration and the motor may not be able to red line. Have you serviced the...
