A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Valve cover gasket

What kind of grease do you use? Wheel bearings grease? I've heard of some using WD40. I used WD40 on my clutch cover gasket and it seemed to work well, gasket came off in 1 piece.

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

I did see them on ebay, but most I saw weren't that much cheaper than new so I opted to buy once cry once. I did not know there were two different gears! Thanks for the heads up, hopefully I got the right one! I ordered it from partzilla along with some other parts and used the OEM PN so I think...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

Wow, you ride far more than I do, even more than I drive my car in a normal year! Thanks for the good luck wishes, we'll see how it goes! Unfortunately my bike is down right now for new clutch and valve adjustment. But soon as that's done I'll be back at it hard.

    Time for a new clutch

Ha, I have a large pair of channel locks. Didn't even think to try them. Thanks for the reminder!

    Time for a new clutch

That could work, but it was really simple and quick to just put it in gear and hold the brake.

You're right. But, meh. I'm not worried about it. I'm sure it'll be fine.

    Time for a new clutch

You're not being nosey at all. Nope, I did not have trouble torqueing the hub nut. I just put the bike in 5th gear and held the rear brake as I tightened the nut. OEM manual only specs 35-50ft*lbs so not that much torque required. I opted to go to 50ft lbs and I bent the washer in 2 places. That...

    Time for a new clutch

That's what the factory manual says to do. I've seen glass with waves so I thought it was interesting they specify a pane of glass. I didn't bother, I held them together like what was previously suggested and didn't see anything obvious. I tightened the hub nut yesterday, and ordered clutch...

Thanks for the reassurance. I'll get those clutch discs on order ASAP. I'm missing out on some great riding weather!

Right, I knew that but the comments from the seller of EBC clutches threw me off. Thanks for the reassurance.

    Time for a new clutch

What oil are you using with your EBC clutch? I was reading the Q&A on EBC frictions and they specify NOT to use synthetic oil with the plates unless it is motorcycle specific. I've been using Rotella T4 which I believe is a synthetic blend. Will I be able to continue using this oil with EBC?

    Time for a new clutch

    I have no idea. I don't have a 1978 GS1000 to compare to.

    Time for a new clutch

I agree with what you're saying. The only caveat with factory specifications is they cannot always capture all possible variables. In this case the measured thickness is within the acceptable range, but what cannot be easily measured is other ways the material has degraded due to time and heat...

    Time for a new clutch

I agree, probably best to get new frictions. Not only would sanding probably bring them below spec, but I also fear they'll start coming apart. As I mentioned before the material is quite brittle and was coming apart as I clean the plates off. Im a tightwad as well and like to save where I can...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

While I had the bike down for clutch repair, I figured I better check the valve lash. It's been ~6k miles since I last adjusted them, and I think the service interval is 5k miles so it's due anyways. Last time I adjusted them I think I had to reshim all but maybe 1 or 2 valves. This time I...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

As luck would have it, as I started to enjoy the riding season the clutch started slipping. I checked my records and I installed new OEM clutch springs ~4k miles ago when it started slipping before. The new springs solved the slip for a while, but now it's slipping again and too much to enjoy...

    Time for a new clutch

I torn into the 850 yesterday. I took the clutch plates out and measured all of them. I measured thickness at 4 spots on each plate, 12, 3, 6, & 9 oclock. Spec per the OEM manual for the frictions is 0.106-0.114" with the limit being 0.094", and steels spec is 0.080" with no limit specified. My...
