'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

Got some warmer weather today, 49F. So I took the 850 out for a quick "round the block" to test the brakes and get it hot to ensure I fixed the oil leak. Brakes are definitely less mushy! The levers are touchy compared to how it was with the original lines. I think I got a minor performance...

Wow, definitely taking shape! Look pretty good, glad to see the project wasn't abandoned. I like the Grey frame.

1981 GS850G to GS1000 crank and barrels swap project

Very interesting! I like it when someone takes on a challenge that all the forum gurus claim is impossible. Although I think most forum gurus on here don't mean that it is entirely impossible to do something. Rather I think their point is that sometimes these sort of projects require a special...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

Fortunately I woke up this morning with an almost unnatural sense of motivation lol. I'm still a young guy (29) but a lot of days I seriously lack energy and motivation to do things. It's not laziness, it's somehow different but I'm not sure how to describe it. I've always been a hard worker and...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

I'm off work this week so I had some time to wrench on the 850 today. I made new Earls brake lines and installed them, as well as flushed the old fluid out of the masters and calipers. I cut one old line open and it actually look fine inside, but it was past time to replace them anyways. The...

Thanks for the image! So it goes under that aluminum plug?

    I am stymied....vacuum leak.

What ring are we discussing here? Is it only on OPs model of bike or is it on other models as well? My 850L perhaps? I don't recall seeing this seal when rebuilding my carbs...

    I am stymied....vacuum leak.

Well bummer. Figured it was a long shot but didn't want the chance of withholding a suggestion from keeping you from fixing it.

    I am stymied....vacuum leak.

Maybe a long shot here, but what about the idle speed adjustment screw/bolt? The one that pushes the throttle open, located on the carbs? I had the same issue on my 750 after I installed all new rubbers and rebuilt the carbs and sealed the airbox. Every time I'd go for a ride, as it warmed up...

    Ran when Parked. 200 buck$ !

Ha, never heard that analogy before. I'll have to remember that. As for the bike, the ad is down so must have sold. Ive always had a soft spot in my heart for that style of bike. But will likely never own one since its not very practical where I live.

Off topic: Need 2 stroke help!

It's fixed!!!! I pressed in a new seal with no sealant/adhesive. It drove in pretty snug so I'm thinking I installed the previous seal incorrectly or the seal itself was defective. Either way, with new seal pressed in and no other repairs made, it fired right up and runs great. Thanks for the...

I'm leaning towards it being installation issue or maybe slightly out of spec seal. I'm going install the new one without any sealer or adhesive. The concern I have with putting anything on it before install is it's a maintenance part so will need replaced again in the future. It'll be nearly...

Off topic: Need 2 stroke help!

I didn't do a compression test, but it is fine by feel. The engine has a brand new jug, piston, rings crank etc, and it is difficult to pull with the compression release closed. Per the factory manual, the crank seals are supposed to be pressed into the case without an adhesive, but I'm...

Yeah I checked the keyslot and flywheel and all is well. That's disappointing, I've done things like that as well. I'm a bit of a hoarder for that exact reason. I pickup anything with a small engine from the side of the road and fix it, then they pile up in my shed. I've recently started...

Can I really not use this Tennessee gasket?

How do you keep the bolts from backing out? I used the factory torque spec on mine but they routinely come loose and it leaks.

Can I really not use this Tennessee gasket?

I've got a reusable rubber valve cover gasket, i dont recall what brand but it's orange. I installed it during the last valve adjustment, and will be doing valve adjustment again this winter. It has been a challenge keeping the correct torque on the cam cover bolts. They work loose often and as...

Ignition timing is determined by the flywheel clocking on the crank, which is keyed. So it can't slip without the key snapping off. It's in good shape so Ignition should be fine. Idk what else to do. I ordered an extra seal, so I'm going to install the new one when it arrives and see how it goes.

I thought about that but there's no perceiveable crank end float. Maybe it was a faulty seal, or maybe I didn't get it fully seated as I thought. The only other thing I can think of is if the crank case got overpressurized somehow. Idk if it could backfire all the way into the crank case?

I ordered a new seal so I'll let you guys know if that fixes it. Now the greater question is, why did the seal blow out? I know it was pressed in fully when I installed it, and it took some force to drive it in so I don't think it was undersized. It was an OEM part. Hmm.
