A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi Allie, Just checking in to say hi. Hi. I hope all is well with you and your son. I've thought about both of you several times over the past year or so. So....since the last time we spoke, I almost died (literally), my daughter had a daughter (two weeks ago), and I almost singlehandidly...

Dirt cheap Dunlop Elite 4 tires

Tires age slowly due to offgassing. Tires age rapidly due to UV light exposure. Tires stored in a semi or completely climate-controlled area out of direct sunlight will last years without any noticeable degradation. Five year old tires stored in a warehouse or a garage out of the sunlight...

Rain riding...likely posted before, but worth another look for the chuckle factor.

Reminds me of the inaugural Indianapolis MotoGP held in 2008: On that day, the remnants of Hurricane Ike were moving across the Great Lakes region and played havoc with the weather in Indiana. They started the race in the rain, ran several laps in the wet, then went into the pits due to...

    New tires

I have identically-sized rims on my GS650E. I run Shinko 712 tires on it, a 100/90-19 up front and a 110/90/18 on the rear. They work tremendously well, and you can get a set at Bike Bandit or Dennis Kirk for under $110 shipped. By the way, Bike Bandit is high on oem parts, but not on tires...

    New 85 GS700ES rims?

Pirelli Sport Demons are still available in the stock GS700 sizes. That is what my bike wears.

    New 85 GS700ES rims?

Bear in mind, Yoshimura changed out the 16" front wheel for an 18" front wheel for more stability at high speed. This slowed the steering down considerably. At track speeds, stability was deemed more important than ultra-fast steering. At road speeds, maybe not so much. You will have a hard...

    Waterproof, insulated boots

Cold-weather hunters and primitive campers have known this for years, so I'll share it here. The best combination to achieve waterproof footwear (other than rubber overshoes) is to forget about Gore-Tex lined boots, and instead purchase the highest quality leather boots you can, 1/2 size...

    '79 vs '80 GS1000 E/S/base-model gas tank differences?

I have not checked clearance of any petcock on an '80 1000E because I've never had access to one to see what tank/petcock combinations may fit. I do have a spare GS1100E tank, haven't measured it to see if it is an '80 or '81. I know the '81 GS750/1100E tank with the '80s style (small lever)...

    '79 vs '80 GS1000 E/S/base-model gas tank differences?

The '79 tank has the petcock location farther forward with mounting hole spacing for the old style lever petcock. The '80 tank has the petcock location farther aft, with wider hole spacing for the dreaded '80 leverless (insert screwdriver) petcock. This was deemed necessary to allow clearance...

GS Road Trip Reliability? 2000 Miles or more?

I've been using synthetic 75W-90 Valvoline for years and everything is still good: It's about $9-$10 at Wal mart.

GS Road Trip Reliability? 2000 Miles or more?

BiL, To answer your final question, here is my checklist for a long trip: Maintenance - Oil (Rotella white jug)/oil filter (Suzuki OEM) changed - Gear oil changed (shafties) - Air filter clean/oil (K&N oem-style) - All electrical connectors inspected/cleaned/dielectric greased - AGM battery...

GS Road Trip Reliability? 2000 Miles or more?

A few years ago, I took a fairly long trip on my 1980 GS1000G to visit a bunch of old friends and family I hadn't seen in person for years. I left Indiana and travelled northwest through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and both Dakotas. I came back through Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Here...

Buying my first GS, is it a good idea or not?

That Gladius would be 1,000 times better than the GS1000 for your needs. If you've got the money for a $3500ish bike, that bike would be hard to beat, so long as everything checks out on it ok. The nice part is, it would be a good step up for you (but not too steep a step), and you'll never...

First GS, Third Bike, 1978 GS750E

I think this bike may have passed through Josh's (thecafekid, a former member) garage about seven years ago. The handlebar/grips/end cap setup is not stock, and looks like what he had on the black '78 he picked up, got up to speed, and flipped.

Buying my first GS, is it a good idea or not?

This bike is not lovely, it's an unrideable hunk of sh*t. It's an $800 parts bike, only because that's what the engine, tank, and exhaust (I think it's a Bassani) would fetch you on ebay. Don't get caught up in the "Caf? Racer" hipster stuff. I see modified bikes like this on Craigslist all...

    Cmon man!...474 lbs 110hp but dosn't run 10s?????????????????????????????

We posted new posts at the same time. See the post I just did right before yours, comparing all four years' GS1100E models. Funny how almost 40 years later, the magazines' 1/4 mile testing is still starting arguments. :)

    Cmon man!...474 lbs 110hp but dosn't run 10s?????????????????????????????

Here are Cycle's dyno charts for all four years' GS1100E models: Interesting to see how they tweaked the engine over the years. The '81 model shows a significant jump in HP from 6,500rpm to redline over the '80 model. The performance for the '81 and '82 models are statistically identical...

    Cmon man!...474 lbs 110hp but dosn't run 10s?????????????????????????????

Ok, here's the deal on testing of bikes "back in the day" by the motorcycle magazines, and their published ETs, which everyone back then would argue over and brag about (as if they had achieved these times themselves on their own bikes). During the classic UJM era (1976-1984), there were four...

    Cmon man!...474 lbs 110hp but dosn't run 10s?????????????????????????????

Amen. I briefly owned a 2002 Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird. If was fully capable of the near-mythical 180mph, but I never had it over 142 (verified via gps archive), and then only for a split second before shutting her down. It was still accelerating pretty briskly, too. Unless you are...
