A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Base gasket surface sealing after prev.owner gasket scraping ...?

Not in my store. Anyhow, I like the ?2". I need to order some other stuff anyway, so I'll add some to the list.

    Separate Rotor From Starter Clutch

The screw heads are behind the gear. Steve misspoke with his fingers when he wrote that the rotor covers the screws. The gear should come off by hand, or even fall off. Everything else should stay captured until you get those screws out and separate the clutch from the rotor. Here's where's...

Base gasket surface sealing after prev.owner gasket scraping ...?

I've used a smear of Suzuki's 1207B in that spot with good results, but I think that counts as RTV. John Pearson told me to use the green (fine) Roloc Scotch-Brite surface prep disks to get old gaskets off. That definitely reduced the number of scratches and gouges I made. 3M stopped making...

what did you wrench on today??

The GS650GM is the 650 Katana. The G means it's a shafty. I'm not sure about the M, except, that's the Katana. I don't know how many differences there are, other than the bodyowrk and seat. I think that was the only model that had that spoke pattern with the shaft drive. They only show up here...

A 650GM! Neat little baby kat! That should be a fun bike when you get it sorted.

Cleaned Carbs - Can't Set Idle

Did you do a bench sync? If not, the #3 carb could be adjusted all the way closed, and the other carbs still fairly open. Or maybe something else is holding the throttles slightly open? Throttle cable too tight?

STT > Grattan Michigan, May 16

That looks like a very fun track, with those elevation changes. I don't know how I feel about that long straight. I'd probably be a coward in that braking zone.

    83 850gl restore

That sounds like a good plan. Add to your plan to check into the charging system as soon as it's running. Or maybe plan to check and clean all the major power connections and grounds as preventive maintenance. 33 years is a long time for corrosion to progress. Perhaps being garage kept it'll be...

    Pic of the week game

That looks an awful lot like turn 7 at Gingerman. A fork in the road. Did you take it?

    The turd

One last post on this tangent: I like the disposable version of Tupperware for this kind of thing. (Glad, store brand, whatever cheap resealable tub.) They offer protection against spills and contamination, and you can stack them on the shelf to get them out of the way.

    GS1000S Rendering

It might be. There's probably a catalytic converter under there that can't be routed around easily. Anyhow, Suzuki isn't likely to make a component that expensive for relatively low volume. Hopefully they would prove me wrong for a thing like this though. That looks good. Anyhow, I don't mind...

    Track days cancelled: STT

That's tragic! I hope this thing doesn't stretch out long enough to interfere with Gingerman late in the summer. Maybe you'll have to join us to get caught up on your track time for the year.

    GK fairing cracked. Plastic Repair.

I've been away for a little while, so I hope I'm not too late. I think maybe you can extract it from trinitrotoluene by the judicious application of heat, but that stuff is even harder to source. Go with the acetone or better yet the stuff for plumbing, as others have suggested and you've...

what did you wrench on today??

My Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer is sheeted with 1/2" ply, and it used to hold my GS, strapped down, without reinforcement. That was before the ply started going bad. I've beefed it up with some 2x4 underneath where the wheels sit now. So, if you ever have the need for a pic of the GK on that ramp...

    Got it started, but...

I didn't hear anything mechanical that was worrisome in your videos, but the intake system needs attention. It won't be able to run smoothly with the intake system in that state. The #1 carb's float bowl is overflowing with gas, suggesting a bad or stuck needle valve. The clamp on #1's intake...

Is it time for a head gasket?

The head bolts at the four corners of the head are also the only place where there is an oil passage at or through the head gasket. The re-torque may have helped.

Bar End Mirrors - Placement Preference?

Mounting them below the bars would put them even farther from where your attention usually is. For me, the bar end mirrors above the bars is the best compromise of easy to use and still see past my elbows.

    Waterproof, insulated boots

I've had the opposite experience with my Gore-Tex boots by TCX. I retired them from riding last season after about 10 years and maybe 60,000 miles. They've been through two low-sides, but I retired them because the leather is tearing away from the shifter protector thingies. Still absolutely...

    track tires

The verbiage for the Avon AM26 Roadrider is confusing. I'm pretty sure that's the same tire that a lot of us use on the street. Therefore, mine do get used on my annual day at Gingerman. I take about 4 psi out of them for track day, and wear is accelerated but even across the carcass...
