Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

Yes, we will only hone when the new sleeve is installed. BTW the LA Sleeve PN is KA750-1 but I wonder if the Wiseco branded sleeve KA750 SL would do? It's apparently obsolete but can be found on ebay. Do you have the specs?

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

As no obvious reason was found for the oil smoke coming out of cylinder N?3, I decided to bite the bullet and bought a Wiseco K1229 big bore kit. Interestingly enough when the sleeves were rebored from 74.5 to 77 mm we discovered that there was severe corrosion on cylinder N?2 as you can see on...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

I finaly got the measurements done on my cylinders. They are all within 1/100 of a mm wherever they are measured. The problem according to the machine shop expert comes from the rings. According to him, he's had an experience with a Kawasaki engine that was totally rebuilt and that smoked like...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

As one says: Analysis Paralysis! As I'm still waiting for the result of some measurements, I was informed that it's possible to examine the cylinder sleeves for cracks with a special paint and UV light? I'm also worried by the fact that the sleeves on my 1st gen 1135 engine seem pretty thin and...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

Great input Greg! I will look into that asap. It could maybe also be done by pouring petrol in the exhaust port and watching any leakage around the camshaft cam cavity? Many thanks

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

No Greg, I checked that right away. I did further research on the cylinder N?3 and found two cracks left and right of the bottom of the skirt. As one can't see them on the outside of the skirt, I dismissed these as the source of the oil consumption? I'm adding a picture that makes it look worse...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

I had the machine shop on the phone and they declared that the cylinder head presented no leak whatsoever. They did the test by pouring oil on top on the combustion chamber while creating a vacuum in each of the intake and exhaust ports. The single culprit left will be the piston rings and their...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

The expander ring was well in place. The valve guide seals were changed for OEM ones as they were suspected for the oil fumes in the first place. BTW, I just rebuilt the engine of my Honda CB 77 of 1966 as there was also smoke from one cylinder and yes, there is no oil seal on the valve guides...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

The problem comes from cylinder N?3 as witnessed with the exhaust manifold off the engine.

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

It's the second round of valve seals. Following the issue the head was pulled to fit OEM valve seals. No difference!

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

Well, I tried with a suction cup used to lap valves and...no leak!

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

There is one more possibility. What if the piston itself had a crack somewhere. In fact when looking closely at the piston N?3, the only difference with the others is a little flame like trace coming out of it's center. On the picture below, you can also see that I had scraped some deposit when...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

Yes, it's the pressure in bars that I quoted. Sorry for the confusion! I understand your explanation about bedding in used rings on newly honed cylinders. The issue is that Suzuki no longer sell .5 oversize rings so I'm stuck with fitting a Wiseco 1229 kit. I've done this last year on my Katana...

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

I pulled out the oil control ring and there was no visible issue? Fitting the piston back into the cylinder with only the oil control ring showed normal kind of resistance.

Lots of smoke from my rebuilt 1135 engine

I'm currently restoring a GS 1000 E with an 1135 16 valve engine. The engine has been completely disassembled and rebuilt with new gaskets including OEM valve oil seals. The PO had fitted .5 oversize pistons that look like new and the rings are well in spec. The cylinder bores were honed during...

Leak from countershaft plug on my 1135

I decided to have an aluminum plug machined to replace the OEM countershaft plug. The diameter of the plug is currently at 46.95 mm. It can be force fitted in the countershaft hole but it will be reduced by 10/100 mm to be able to remove it without too much pain. The O-ring has a diameter of...

Leak from countershaft plug on my 1135

Seems like a good idea! Thanks

Leak from countershaft plug on my 1135

I've just finished rebuilding a 1135 engine to fit into a GS 1000 E frame. One issue however: there is an oil leak from the countershaft plug. Has anyone tried to replace it with an aluminum plug fitted with a O-ring? I've tried replacing the plug with a new OEM one but having to force fit it in...

    3D printing of throttle body

That would be great! I don't have a CAD file but might find someone who would do it for me. I'll keep you informed.

    3D printing of throttle body

Given the obsolescence of the OEM throttle bodies for many of our GS models, I was wondering why we don't get someone to print a 3D throttle body for us. The idea being that we only need the housing for the mechanical part as we could use non OEM switches for the electrical part. While throttle...
