A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Trailer math

I will agree that a longer tongue is beneficial, but a "standard" trailer, like the frame you would find at Harbor Fright will work just fine. If you make any modifications to that trailer, it would be to narrow it down about 6 inches. A car-top carrier on that frame is about as basic and...

    Engine oil leak

It would also be nice to know exactly what bike is being discussed. By the picture, it appears to be a 4-cylinder Suzuki, 1982 or newer. Yeah, your signature mentions an '82 650, but there are also other bikes, and this just might also be an unmentioned project that just rolled in, and is not...

How do I get the final drive thing off the rim? And the bearings?

Yeah, the tabs will hold the brake bolts, ... if you use them. :-k I replaced my bolts with stainless socket-head bolts, which are round on the outside, so tabs would not work. .

Valve Stem Seals Won't Come Out - Edit: they came out

Be careful with any impact around the seals and guides. It doesn't take much to snap a guide. .

Best way to clean exhaust ports - 79 GS850

Don't worry about the black stuff, just get the old gaskets out of there. .

How do I get the final drive thing off the rim? And the bearings?

I am just going to quote your questions and answer them individually. The tabs from the brass, how do I bend it off without breaking it? For the screws. I am considering just leaving it and trying to see if it works. I use an old screwdriver and a hammer. Wedge the screwdriver between the bolt...

Twit of the day award goes to... Me for killing my ignition system GS850GN

You can get a new one at a dealer, but since you are in the UK, I have no idea where. They are expen$ive from a dealer, though, it's best to go with a used one from eBay. The biggest problem with getting one from eBay is all of the fakes. The fakes LOOK like a Polaris unit, but vary in the...

Twit of the day award goes to... Me for killing my ignition system GS850GN

The points might be a "fire break", but the more-important part is that in a points-based ignition, polarity is irrelevant. You have the points, which are just switches, and you have the coils, which are ... well ... coils. The direction that the current flows through them doesn't really...

Twit of the day award goes to... Me for killing my ignition system GS850GN

If you still have the stock points, your ignition system should be unaffected. The charging system might be so lucky. You may as well follow the lead of hundreds of others and get a Polaris R/R to replace your (separate) rectifier and regulator. .

    GS850 No carbs

Skip the "s", it's just "pre-'80". As in "1979". As in "the only year the 850 had a kicker". There were so many improvements with the '80 model, I don't know why you would want to go backward. .

    GS850 No carbs

The "choke" control in the middle ended in 1981. The '82 models had it on the left handgrip. The carbs in that link are set up for the '82 "choke", but parts are available to go back to the '80/'81 type. .

    GS850 No carbs

Confirmation time. No kickstart and no 17-digit VIN narrows it down to a 1980 model year. The kick starter was only in the 1979 models, which are also the only 850s that had the VM carbs and points. The VM carbs used smaller-diameter ports in the head. The 17-digit VIN started with the 1981...

    Sidecar on the T120

Have you ever piloted a 3-wheeled device? :-k Be prepared for a COMPLETELY different experience. And having the third wheel on just one side (as opposed to equal-distant on a trike setup) just adds that "extra touch of excitement". :encouragement: As others have mentioned or hinted, Doggles...

    GS1100/650 parts interchange?

One other thing that will transfer from the 650 to the 1100GK is the cap on the tire's valve stem. :-\\\ As others have noted, not much else. The 1100GK is a unique beast. The frame has all the mounting points for the fairing and rear luggage. The forks are larger than any other GS, and...

    79 gs850 bent frame :(

If he has a '79, it won't be an L. :-k The first 850L was in '80. On the other hand, there could still be some uncertainty. The first half or so of the '80 production run was assembled in '79, so would have that date on the VIN plate. Somebody might have called it a '79 because of that. .

Will Berryman's Carb Dip harm finish or nylon/plastic parts if soaked over-night?

Good to hear that they are at least partially clear. Go ahead and soak for 30 minutes, then rinse in the hottest running water you have. Follow that with a spray of carb cleaner through the passages. That might get the last of any crud out, then finally blow them clear with compressed air...

Will Berryman's Carb Dip harm finish or nylon/plastic parts if soaked over-night?

Agreed. It is my opinion that when the instructions were written, the chemicals in the can could, indeed, do the job in that "15-30 minute" time frame. However, since the safety weenies have taken over, the time needed is more like 15-30 HOURS. I have not counted how many sets of carbs I have...

    GS850 Oil Leak

Start looking at the BACK of the engine. If you don't see anything as high as the head gasket leaking there, check the cam chain tensioner. Besides the gasket between the tensioner and the cylinders, there are two o-rings in the tensioner itself that can leak. The oil then gets blown around...

    gs550l choke

That video is not perfectly correct, but it's close enough to give the idea. First of all, "choke" is a term that does not technically apply here. What we have on our carbs is an "enrichment system". The system does the same thing, but it does it by opening specific ports to supply a richer...
