A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    battery vs concrete

Both replies (so far) are hinting about problems with OLDER batteries. REALLY old, as in 40-50 years ago. Battery cases used to be made of rubber. Treated to be rigid and somewhat non-permeable, but the calcium in the concrete could leach through the pores of the rubber case and neutralize...

    Secret spot for speakers

I have tried earplugs. Yes, they do quiet down the wind and road noise, but still allow you to hear what's going on. At the end of a long day, you are less-fatigued, due to lack of all the auditory assault. I admit that my first experiment was with the wrong earplugs, which soured the overall...

    Secret spot for speakers

It may look a bit "dorky", but a helmet liner helps quite a bit. It moves the friction point away from the ear buds, so the helmet does not pull on them. One downside of a liner is that it will make your helmet a bit tighter for a short while. Then it will fit just fine, but if you leave the...

Looking for advice on small fairing or windshield for 82 GS1100E

Your 1.0 springs will be fine with the Street EX. I have 1.1 springs in my 850 and my fairing weighs less than your ‘Jammer. I do think my gravitational attraction is a bit more than yours, but your springs will be fine. What viscosity oil are you using? I recommend 10w. .

What to look for when buying a rim?

If you, in fact, have a 1981 GS1000G, it would have come with a 17" rear wheel. The one in that last link was a 16" wheel. It will certainly mount up, but you might have to adjust some spacer thicknesses with the brake caliper. I have had to make that adjustment a couple of times, but I don't...

    Looking for a smaller battery!

As much as we like to talk about smaller batteries and such, the OP has not been back to visit this thread for 10 days. In fact, the "last activity" in his profile and this thread have the same time stamp, so he hasn't even logged into the forum since asking this question. .

    Barn find 1980 GS450L!

Go ahead and see if it might crank over, but do NOT use a running car as a jump starter. Turn the car engine off BEFORE connecting cables to the bike. If if cranks, please don't expect it to start. Some here report that their carbs are crudded up after 17 WEEKS of sitting still, 17 YEARS is...

Looking for advice on small fairing or windshield for 82 GS1100E

The Plexifairing3 on my wife's 850L uses the same quick-mounts. We don't take the shield off for anything but maintenance, but it's sooo much easier when necessary. :encouragement: .

    Tank/Steering Stem Swap

Just to toss a little bit of light in a different direction, the '80/'81 750E and 1100E also had leading-axle forks. :-k I'm not sure exactly why, but that's the way they were set up. As mentioned previously, the front wheel on the 1000GL is in exactly the same place, relative to the rest of...

Looking for advice on small fairing or windshield for 82 GS1100E

If Photo*ucket is playing well, you can click on the link in my sig for my son's (now sold) '82 650GL and get a hint of how it might look. .

    Tank/Steering Stem Swap

There is no difference in the steering stem angle in the frame. :-k The only difference is in the triple trees. The G (and E) triples have more of an angle, keeping the fork tubes farther forward. The G triples have less of an angle, which pulls the fork tubes back. The front wheel remains...

Looking for advice on small fairing or windshield for 82 GS1100E

Rich posted a link to National Cycle, I'll go a step farther and narrow it down to the Street Shield EX. It's just a bit bigger than the one that Baatfam suggested and does a pretty good job of deflecting the blast without removing you from the experience. There is also the basic Street...

    1982 GS750E Clutch Spring Limits

Come on guys, I know that "cheap" and "tight" are synonymous with the GSR population, but a full set of OEM springs is a whopping $10.26. Add in $4.99 for flat-rate shipping, it's $15.25. "Buy once, cry once" is the usual suggestion, but this one barely merits a whimper. :-\\\ .

    Headlight coverage

ANY light on a motorcycle that leans is going to be a problem in the curves. :-k Look at it this way: the headlight is angled down a bit to keep the light on the road. Simply leaning the bike over puts it pretty much at the same spot on the road. However, when going around a curve, the road...

GS550T running lean, what else to check?

Other than the few times the engine has started (as reported in this thread), have you ridden the bike at all? :-k Replacing valve seals can be a worthy task, but if the bike is not smoking or burning oil, I would not bother with it. Adjusting the valves is a little different between the 450...

How critical is lobe position when checking valve clearances?

Very true, but TDC is not where you want to be. Someday I might bother to see what the angle might be, but you need to have the two adjacent cam lobes approximately equal-distance from the axis of their respective valves. Then measure the clearance on BOTH valves. There is a bit of leeway in...

GS550T running lean, what else to check?

Regarding your point #3: don't rely on the fact that the bucket will spin to say that there is clearance. I opened up one engine that was new to me, so I could check clearances. Found one that would not allow my 0.0015" feeler. The bucket would spin, so I went one size smaller on the shim...
