A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Winter maintenance

Oil sump? Unless the oil pan is leaking or I stripped the drain hole, I wouldn't bother getting to that. And even if you do get it apart for some reason I think you will find the strainer to be perfectly clean. No need to disassemble parts which have been happily together for 30 years, IMHO.

    Camchain Tensioner Removal Info Needed

I thought the manual had something in there for removing the cam chain tensioner. For reference, here's a link: http://tsillas.chickenkiller.com/~jtsillas/sharedpics/Suzuki_GS550_Repair_Manual.pdf There's also that nice write up on replacing tensioner oil seals which has nice pictures too...

Warning... crap quality of Forsetti base gaskets...

The gasket is especially narrow at that spot. I've always applied a layer of permatex sealer on both sides of the gasket right there.

    Front chain sprocket leaking oil

There are three seals there if I recall. The clutch push-rod seal. The shifter shaft. And the final drive shaft. You might as well do all three if you go in there. You'll need to pull the sprocket to get to two of them if I recall. I did all three five or six years ago and its been dry enough...

    Engine tickover and timing

Idle problems like you are seeing are due to the wrong pilot circuit mixture. I had the same problem until I went through the carbs and readjusted the float heights according to the correct procedure using a vernier caliper's height gauge. But that's just one way the carbs can deliver too much...

82 gs550 clutch makes creaking sound when pulled

I think this started happening after I changed the cable. The clutch now makes a faint creaking sound as I pull the lever. Works fine otherwise but I am concerned. Sound is coming from inside the bottom end somewhere.

'06 Katana 750 - airbox hoseclamps missing screws?

I've had this bike now for 5 years or so and it runs like a swiss watch. Today I took the tank off to clean the air filter (sits under the tank) and noticed for the first time that all the hose clamps which attach the airbox to the carbs are missing the screw which is used to tighten the...

Can you do a compression test?

    82 550LZ - Newly rebuilt - Carb Proble - Break-In

Also forgot to ask if you had checked the valve clearances once the cams where back on.

    82 550LZ - Newly rebuilt - Carb Proble - Break-In

Rebuild means a new top end? Lots can go wrong with a top end tear down/reassembly. Your cams might be one pin off from the correct timing position or the number of pins between them might be off. Just for my sanity I would pull the covers and double check that. Turn the motor over with a...

    Brake lines

Anyone using the Earl's banjo fittings? I recently swapped handle bars out (replace the buck horns with flat bars on the 550) and I need to shorten the brake line. I was thinking to chop some off and put on the screw on fitting.

    Bouncing Tach Needle!!

Seems to start happening when the temp gets in the low 40s. Very annoying and distracting but otherwise harmless. Cure? Tried: new tach cable, old tach cable, greased tach cable, opened up tach, oiled tach

    Erratic idle on 82 550L.

I lived with a crazy idle for about a year. A week ago it occurred to me I should replace the petcock vacuum hose as it was loose on the carb end and had a kink in it from being the wrong inner diameter. Guess what. That not only fixed my idle problem it also fixed a fuel starvation problem it...

    removing a master link (clip)

I have the RK chain tool but when I set it up to push on the pin the tool also pushes on the back plate which holds both pins. I think if I push on the pins like this the pins will eventually pop out of the back plate as well. I don't have a tool which allows the back plate to move as I push on...

    removing a master link (clip)

Hey guys, I have a perfectly good chain and master link which I've been riding for 5k miles or so. Plenty of life left on it. But recently I got the urge to try changing my final drive ratio so I took the opportunity (while fixing a flat) to change my rear sprocket. The smaller sprocket looks...

    ate another stator

Doesn't get too hot. You can put your hand on it for a few seconds. I tried splicing the sense wire to the tail light but noticed the R/R was putting out up to 16V. Didn't seem right. Not sure why the big voltage drop. I probably should clean the contacts in my key switch (do I just spray some...

    ate another stator

So I ordered the new stator and finally got around to it. Started by disconnecting the old stator from the R/R. Turns out the connectors were completely melted. I used fairly heavy duty spade connectors with plastic covers. The plastic was a black ball of coal and it also melted a few other...

    ate another stator

One more question regarding R/Rs in general: using a shunt type RR (like the Honda unit I currently have) would I get more life out of the stator if I relocate the sense wire to allow the RR to generate a higher voltage? Would this allow the stator to run a bit cooler?

    ate another stator

So the new stator came in the mail today. I am now considering installing the Compufire 55402 R/R. Only question I have is will it fit on the GS550? Can someone give the dimensions of the R/R?
