A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Stumped, Puzzled & Confused

Shame that little trick did`nt work, though in hindsight I missed the fact the bike had been stood a couple of years. If there was petrol in the bowls chances are the carbs are gummed up and need a good clean out. Most of the bikes I`ve got going this way have only been stood a couple of days...

    Stumped, Puzzled & Confused

This might seem a daft suggestion, but it has always worked for me if the bike has been stood and won`t start. Take the two carb breather tubes (one connects between each pair of carbs) and with choke on, blow a few times into them. The bike should fire up. Give it a try anyway, it has surprised...

    Am I missing something ?

Thanks to everyone who answered my previous postings about my GS750 starting problems. Before I go tearing into the engine, just thought I`d ask whether anyone can think of something I`ve overlooked. To re-cap, bike was being used every day, starting fine & running well. Then one day, was a pig...

    Alternator question

I could`nt do the check with the engine warm as it won`t start at all, but did keep the throttle wide open.

    My crash story

Just thought I`d send best wishes from across the pond !. I`ve been lucky in that I have not had any serious spills, but your story set me thinking how easy it can happen. I have been extra careful since reading it to keep scanning the road ahead, behind and to the side and fix a riding plan in...

    Alternator question

Compression readings if I remember right were 55, 55, 65 & 75psi. I dropped a bit of oil in each pot but it only improved the compression by a few psi. Just checked the spark plugs again, not sure about the spark produced. Can see it in daylight ok but I would`nt describe it as a fat blue spark.

    Alternator question

Thanks for the advice. I`ll check out connections again and the valve clearances before I look at the head. Dink, I did`t mean I was taking the head off to check the alternator. Its just that I`ve checked all the electrics and fuel system and they seem ok but she still won`t fire up. I was just...

    Poor starting tip for GS550 & 750`s

Great ! I`m glad this worked ok. It does sound like b......s, but its nearly always worked for me.

Putting my bike away for winter

I agree with Keith, think you should run the engine once a week. I ride all year round in north east England, but use a !winter hack", my best bikes I keep off the road for the most part because they salt the roads over here and it corrodes bike parts very fast. Anyway, I keep the tanks full...

    Alternator question

Thanks everyone, I suspected the alternator would`nt play a role in starting, but just needed the confirmation. Oh well, looks like I`ll have to dust off the spanners, get the wife some chocolates and vanish into the garage to start stripping the cylinder head !.

    Alternator question

I`m going to make myself look really stupid here, but electrickery has never been my strongpoint !. If you`ve read my previous postings, you`ll know about my GS750 starting problems. Carbs are getting fuel ok, spark at plugs ok (although not what I`d call a fat blue spark). Compression is low so...

    Another camchain question !

Thanks again for the advice. I don`t know for sure that the chain needs replacing, but it is getting rattly and the engine has a lot of miles on it. Thought while I am stripping the head, might just be prudent to do replace the chain while the bike is off the road.

    Another camchain question !

Thanks for the advice guys. I did try the test without oil first and then with oil in each pot, but only got a few psi improvement. Unfortunately can`t re-test with engine hot as the old girl won`t fire up at all. Fuel is getting through, ignition timing fine and good spark at plugs. Have`nt...

    Poor starting tip for GS550 & 750`s

A lot of you probably know this one, but I thought I`d post it anyway. I was shown it many moons ago and it nearly always works !. If attempts to start the bike from cold fail, and the motor turns over but won`t fire, blow into the two carb breather tubes. With choke on, just a couple of short...

    Another camchain question !

It looks like I`m going to have to whip off the cylinder head of my GS750 (re: previous thread regarding starting problems) and check out the valve seating etc. Think the camchain is ovrdue for replacement too, but don`t really want to take the engine out and split the cases, so was thinking...

    Cam chain tensioner blades

Does anyone know whether these are still availabke for the GS750. Mine is a 1979 model. It looks like a top end overhaul may required, along with a rebore, and I reckon the blade will be worn out too. Also need to get some valve guides. Got a full set of valves and springs still in the oilpaper...

    GS750 Starting problem

Thanks for your advice guys. The bike has 89000 miles on the clock so I guess she is getting a bit tired. I did try wiring the coils direct to the battery (fully charged) but no luck. Unfortunately the compression test was done cold as she won`t even try to fire up. I will try again tomorrow...

    GS750 Starting problem

Hi !, I`m a new member having only just found out about this site, which seems really good, so I`m hoping someone out there might be able to help !. I`ve been riding GS750`s for about twenty years here in sunny England, and have always been able to keep em running, but this time I`m stumped. The...
