A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Removal of gs850g driveshaft seal.

I'm seeing part number 09283-35018, NOT 09283-35017: https://www.onlinecycleparts.com/oemparts/a/suz/50d40162f8700230d8b4e49b/secondary-drive-gear It looks like this seal stayed consistent 1979-1983 on all the shafties. It also looks like it's NLA, at least in the US of A. Dang. Three...

Broken clutch cable on a group ride!

You can free up some cable length by yoinking the ferrule off, slicing and peeling some of the vinyl covering off, then unwinding some of the metal spiral of the cable housing. Break off the excess and you can easily free up an inch or two of cable. On most bikes you can weasel out a bit of...

Secondary drive drain plug cracked casing

Agreed -- the gear oil back there is not under pressure, so this is a case where a careful JB Weld repair could actually do the trick just fine. The gear oil does get pretty warm in operation and a bit thinner, but not nearly as hot as engine oil. If the drain bolt will screw in, then Don's...

    Spark Plugs

NGK discontinued B8ES (2411) plugs a few years back. They'll sell you the BR8ES (5422) resistor plugs as the replacement. These are externally identical and will screw in and work, but they are resistor plugs, not the correct non-resistor plugs. The listings for the B8ES on scAmazon and fleaBay...

Risks running pod filters in wet weather?

I can recall one instance, a rally when we rode during an absolutely epic downpour, where some of the folks with pod filters were having some issues. The outer two cylinders would drown out a bit at lower RPMs, but a quick rev generally cleared things out. In anything but a monsoon that you...

    GS Sightings

Interesting to hear Ryan conversing like a normal human with another human, and not in his snarky "presenter" voice. And that was indeed well-spotted; I didn't see the GS at all the first time through. Very thought-provoking video, too.

Cylinder Plugs (little semi circular rubber bits in side of head)

One good example, ThreeBond 1184: https://www.z1enterprises.com/yamaha-xs650-3-bond-1194-gasket-sealant.html This stuff remains very flexible and stretchy, sticks very tightly to metals (but can be scraped and peeled if needed), and doesn't form balls like RTV. It's mostly used when joining...

Cylinder Plugs (little semi circular rubber bits in side of head)

I generally use a wee squidge of case sealer on used half-moons, not RTV. If I really, really didn't want to bestir myself that day, sure, I'd try them without any goos or elixirs; as long as there's some sort of small compression factor when you tighten the bolts, you should be fine. As long...

    BS32 Float Height

No, from the outside of the bowl. Pretend the tubing is a bolt and try threading it in just like it's a bolt. And that's a good point about the notch in the threads in some carbs, Ed. Last time I did this was on VM carbs, so it may not work on BS carbs. If you can scare up a spare drain bolt...

    BS32 Float Height

I've successfully used plain Tygon tubing many times. Select a hunk of translucent fuel tubing with an OD a little larger than the threads and just screw it into the float bowl. The soft plastic will catch the threads and seal surprisingly well. If I had to guess, I've probably used 3/16" ID...

    1982 Suzuki GS650G - Rear Wheel

Ah. We originally thought the question came up because there are a lot more GS850 bits out there than GS650. The "I want phat meetz on my shaftie" question comes up with some regularity around here. So far, I recall one moderate success on a GS1000G that required a lot of advanced fabrication...

    Fork oil leak

From roll-on to roll-off, definitely under two hours. But I've done a lot of these, and have the tools on hand. Air or battery impact and M8 impact-rated bit for the damper rod bolt, a damper rod tool, seal driver. If the brake pads got oily, you'll need to replace them, and clean up the...

    Water Drain

Thanks for digging that up, Bob! And yes, the 1100E has pretty much the same system for draining water from this area; there's a slot on the inside wall of the starter cavity where the starter and alternator wires enter and exit, and a hole under the starter leading into a sort of "empty room"...

    Buying brake pads

Thanks for the correction, Ed! I do know that the Ferodo platinums I tried worked fantabulously well, but they did indeed cause visible rotor wear on my GS850G. So it makes sense that they're somewhere in the middle and not fully sintered. You can find leftover stock of the Ferodo FDB218...

    Buying brake pads

You can't really accidentally buy sintered pads for a GS... they are out there, or were at one time, and they do work great, but your front wheel will quickly be covered in glitter that used to be your rotors. IIRC, the Ferodo Platinums were sintered and had this effect. I don't think they're...

    Instability at high speeds

I suspect this is a good chunk of the answer. Also, air pressure in the front suspension is a terrible, imprecise, leak-prone way to manage spring rate. Install a proper set of straight-rate front fork springs from Sonic springs or Racetech and set sag correctly. Lowering only in the rear can...

Looking for 80/20 Tires that fit

American Moto Tire is a great source for tires, in the US anyway. It's also a great way to research what's available. They don't have everything, but they do list almost everything that's out there. Anyway, here are the dual-sport tires available in 16"...

    High Altitude GS1000

I'd also perhaps make sure my air filter, whatever it is, is fresh and flowing freely, and maybe tuck in a spare set of plugs.
