A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Airbox to carb boots..GS 1000

This. Suzuki never sold the 1000 boots for VM carbs separate to the airbox. The 750 boots fit well - the 'trumpets' inside the airbox are about 5mm shorter but it doesn't affect performance at all

Push nuts that hold frame cover on seat?? 79 GS1000

01948-05012 according to the fische. But you can get them from any decent car spares place and a lot cheaper (pennies).

Type of chrome for rechroming front forks

You could send them over here to one of the fork specialists eg Philpotts , Dynasurf (there's a few others equally as good). Postage won't be a killer and with the ? in the doldrums at the moment you might get a good deal. Beware long lead in times though - they're all usually pretty busy.

GS 550D Mikuni VM22SS tuning problem.

Each carb should be similar but probably not exactly the same - tolerances etc. I used to play with the fuel screw settings so that I could set all the air screws at exactly 2 turns out but there's no point. And you burn your hands!

GS 550D Mikuni VM22SS tuning problem.

Pretty much but I bet you'll find 1 turn out on the fuel screw too much and you'll be winding the airscrew out too much to compensate - anything over 3 or less than 1 on the airscrew and you'll have to tweak the fuel screw as it won't run evenly. And the max revs thing - you need a keen ear to...

GS 550D Mikuni VM22SS tuning problem.

Firstly are your carbs clean - really clean (fully dismantled, both pilot jets clean and either dipped in a suitable cleaner or ultra sonically cleaned)? Second, are the fuel mixture screws in good condition - no broken tips (they break really easily) stuck in there? If the answers are yes then...

Fitting a 1970s Rickmans front Fairing to a 1981 Suzuki GS550E (UK Spec)

One of those universal cockpit fairings would probably be ok. They do take the sting out of the wind and rain. Or alternatively you could fit Jota bars to your bike with existing fairing and adjust them to suit. You might be able to just make them suit your riding position plus avoid the fairing.

    Gs 750 engine/ fuel problem

Try running it on prime as Tom suggested. If it works ok it's your petrol tap. Don't leave it on prime when you park it up or you'll run the risk of dropping petrol all over the ground. Starter motor could be worn brushes, dirty armature, poor earth, jammed mechanism etc. I'm only just up the...

    Pod filters for a 81 gs550l

They might do but do the measurements for frame clearance and check against the length of the pods. I know K&N do a 'double pancake' filter (one filter fits a pair of carbs) for your bike.

    Pod filters for a 81 gs550l

Measure the external diameter of your carb intakes and the distance from the back of the carb to the frame on the outside carbs. Most commonly available pods are too long to fit between the carbs and the frame hence the need to measure. I'm pretty sure you'll be restricted to buying K&Ns...

GS550 spluttering at low revs after new coils

Wrapping your exhaust won't have affected anything - your bike in standard fettle isn't fussy enough to notice that. If she's running fine when she's not very hot then it's not ignition nor fuel. Which suggests valve clearances (it won't be fuel evaporating out of the carbs - they're insulated...

GS550 spluttering at low revs after new coils

Leaving the tap on prime eliminates a faulty vacuum system - nothing else. I presume your tap is 30+ years old and they do play up at some point. I was unclear that your stuttering problems only started when you changed the coils so sounds like a plan to swap the old ones back on. Ref...

One other thought. Have the valve clearances been checked?

GS550 spluttering at low revs after new coils

Those no- name coils are fine and just plug and play for many Japanese bikes from the day. They won't be causing a problem (unless they're faulty, which is very unlikely). I'm still minded that your issues are fuel related. Try leaving the tap on prime all the time (until you turn the engine...

GS550 spluttering at low revs after new coils

The intermittent starting issue - does it start poorly after you've left it for a few days? If so the solution to that could be switching your petrol tap to prime for 30 seconds or so before you hit the starter button (and turning it to on after it's started). Another thought, did you put new...

GS550 spluttering at low revs after new coils

When you had the carbs ultrasonically cleaned were they completely split down or did whoever cleaned them dunk them in only partially stripped? I've sorted out loads of 'cleaned' carbs by cleaning them. My guess for the poor starting is that the choke wasn't / isn't working properly - the pick...
