A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    New rectifier bad?

Me too Me too I had a similar experience. I bought a new Rick's R/R when I had my 750 and it seemed to be defective. I sent it back and they agreed. It was replaced and the new one worked perfectly. I don't think it's very common but it's certainly something to consider.:|

    Click . . .

Sigh....this should be a 'sticky'. Sigh....this should be a 'sticky'. If your relay (solenoid) is clicking, it is almost, for sure, working properly. Your solenoid clicks every, single time you start your bike. When it starts successfully, you don't hear it because the click is 'drowned out'...

    Brake Dragging

What a drag!! What a drag!! What I was getting at in my first post is this: With disc brakes (also drum brakes) a very slight amount of drag is normal. Guys that work on brakes a lot call it a "hint of drag". However, it should be very slight and your tire should spin for a couple of seconds...

Drag Drag When you spin it, hard, with your hand, how long does it stay spinning?

    Fuel Cap Gaskets

Gasket Gasket I've never had a problem but considered that dilemma a short while ago while I was buying gas. If 'push came to shove', I think you could probably make one that would work quite well. I'm not surprised, at all, that you can't buy just the gasket. Those Japsters are way too...

    How to test the starter?

Armature Armature If it doesn't work right and the brushes look good, there's a good chance it can be the armature. One time, my starter worked only about half the time. The brushes looked great but the armature was really 'gunked' up. I cleaned it up with steel wool (about 60 seconds) and...

    How to test the starter?

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks, Terrylee. You're a good man!:) (I got really interested in the subject several years ago because I'd had a number of problems and was totally 'stumped'.:(

    How to test the starter?

No offense, Terrylee (and BigT), but that is not right. There is always power going to the solenoid from the battery...always, unless the wiring is bad. If the 'screwdriver trick' works, all it means is that you're bypassing the circuit that is completed when you use the starter button....as...

Bike is not even attempting to start

Yeah!! Yeah!! That's a VERY good question.... that I forgot to ask!!:o

Bike is not even attempting to start

Starter Starter If the starter was working fine up to now, that's not likely to turn out to be the problem. Usually, you get a bit of a 'hint' before they stop completely. Your problem is quite isolated so it should be easy to get it figured out. First, and foremost, check to see if your...

    Rear Tire flat spot

Cool Cool Very interesting! Thanks for the report.:) I think this may be one of the very rare instances where the solution wouldn't have been found by doing a 'search'.

    Battery Hold Down?

Strapped Strapped I may just have a nice, content, docile battery because it's never tried to get away from me yet....and I don't have a tie down.:p

    Seafoam

Huh? Huh? You "never see mention of it used as preventative maintenance on this forum"???? Do a 'search' and you'll find hours of reading material.;) Seafoam isn't the most 'dead horse beaten subject' on the website but it would certainly be in the 'top 50'...maybe even higher but, God, there...

    My starter... stopped

Clickety Click Clickety Click I think the last 2 responses are 'spot on'. If you replace the solenoid, be sure to save the old one.:) When you perform the 'screwdriver trick', you're giving the starter a very direct, hard 'jolt' (which it needs). You don't necessarily get that when it goes...

Amen! If it happened very easily, I would have done it dozens of times.;)

    Rear Tire flat spot

Huh? Huh? Locking up the tire one time would cause what he described?? I think not.:p I was known to lock up my back brake every now and then when I was younger(also just recently when I put on a new rear brake line).....and I've never experienced that phenomenon.

    Rear Tire flat spot

Curious? Curious? Don't you think it would, at the very least, be worth trying to figure out the problem before buying a new tire?? It's awfully easy to say "buy a new tire" but jeeeeeeeeeeez, what's wrong with, at least, trying to figure it out? After all, what if it's not the...

    Rear Tire flat spot

Balance Balance I'd suggest you check out the balance, as Billy suggested. Also, check to see that it was mounted correctly on the rim. A non-concentric (fancy term) tire is essentially 'out of round' because it will cause a high spot. If it doesn't look like it's in exactly the right...

    Broken sidecover tabs

Also Also Also, the rubber grommets that the tabs fit into get really hard and brittle after so many years. I replaced mine on both of the GS's and it made the tabs slide in and out really easily. You can order them just like any other OEM part. (I tried to find some that would work at the...
