A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can't get her to idle without choke

If the bike needs choke to start, even when warm, then it sounds like the pilot circuit isn't passing enough fuel at one or more carbs. The pilot circuit in your carbs has several small passages and they clog easily, especially the small hole directly above the pilot fuel screws tip and the...

    I am back………

Welcome! 15 years is a long time. I hope the road will be kind to you. I read on this site that Scotty passed away some time ago. I miss his posts and his humor.

    Cold start

If you don't know when the valve clearances were last checked or adjusted, you should check them simply because it's basic maintenance. If the valves are within spec, then I suspect your pilot circuit isn't supplying enough fuel.

    VM26 Fuel T

I bought the Z1 T fitting and the two other tubes. They work well. About 3 years now and no problems. But, I couldn't get the o-rings to slip in. Much too large. I complained to Z1 and they said they fit, which is BS. I bought the o-rings Robert Barr sells (or used to?) and his o-rings are perfect.

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

I'd balance the carbs per the factory recommendations, as you said you did. As for the exhaust smoke, did you do any other work besides the carbs? How many miles on the motor and has it been sitting long or had a history of infrequent use? The valve stem seals get hard over time. Also, the more...

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

Yes, I knew about the factory applied sealant on the CV's mixture screws and the VM's pilot fuel and side air screws. It was applied to try to stop emissions tampering. It sure made a lot of owners frustrated over the years.

Red Loctite on fuel mixture screws.

Thanks for sharing your fix. There seems to be no limit to what some PO's do. Why would anyone apply sealant to these screws?

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

Thanks, Dave. I used to spend so much time here it was almost like a part time job. Some of my advice was more like a short novel. I visit every month or so, but don't always reply. As time goes by, a lot of members have died or disappeared. I still miss "Scotty", for one, even though I never...

Slight roughness/stumble off idle- GS1100E with Kerker, APE pods, and DynoJet Stage 3

Well, by applying some tape and increasing the restriction, you would obviously change how air enters the filters and how that effects pressure. We often are short sighted and think that the least restriction at the filters is best. But there needs to be SOME restriction to avoid sudden pressure...

Perfect Idle and rev up while standing. Stutters and jerks when driving

I made the mistake of not reading ALL the recent replies. Obviously you were bitten by the previous owner(s) not knowing what they're doing. At least my last sentence of my previous reply might be helpful to someone. Glad you persevered and got it right. It's all part of the fun of owning old...

Perfect Idle and rev up while standing. Stutters and jerks when driving

One of the most common, classic symptom of fuel starvation, is the bike will idle and rev up well as long as there's NO LOAD on the engine. Under load, the motor needs more fuel to run well. As others have said, it's easy to check the electrical system and be sure it's operating correctly. With...

Slight roughness/stumble off idle- GS1100E with Kerker, APE pods, and DynoJet Stage 3

I think synching the carbs at about 2,500 rpm's is fine. You may have noticed that you can synch them very evenly at a certain rpm and then see the levels change a little when you lower or raise the rpm's. You could go nuts trying to make them perfect at various rpm's. Synching at a higher rpm...

    1977 GS750 (now 850 ) VM26SS Carbs / replacement jet question.

I don't have a factory manual for your exact model. The procedure varies a little compared to a 1000 for example. I'm sure if you search or make a specific topic, someone can help. Basically, there's a "nick" in the slide that you can use to get the slides APPROXIMATELY in synch. Turn the carbs...

    1977 GS750 (now 850 ) VM26SS Carbs / replacement jet question.

I have no experience with re-jetting where you restrict or decrease air flow at the entrance of a jetting circuit as a way of compensating for increasing air flow because you added free flow filters and a pipe. I made that statement because I re-jet the right way. I don't practice backwards...
