DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Large Valve Clearances

I have had valve clearance open up for me, on my 78 GS750. The vast majority of the time they will close up over time, though. I don't know why, and I really don't care. If your bike was running reasonably well before, I doubt if any valves are bent. Swap out the shims necessary to bring...

    lost key

On some of the GS models they had number printed on the seat lock, where it could be read by anyone. They changed that thankfully; no need to make life easier for thieves.

    Help removing valve seals

I have a set similar to these: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=94500 I find them invaluable for prying things loose from spots my fingers won't fit.

    Flyscreen for GS1100

Try the Spitfire from Slipstreamer. They say that it's only for 7" headlights, but you can make it work with the 8". http://www.slipstreamer.com/Product/Sport/sport.html

Shaft or Chain... that's the question...

I never had gas ooze out the filler cap when really topping it off, but I only do that when I'm getting right back on the road to put some miles on. If you let it sit for even 10-15 minutes, the temperature rise inside the tank can cause the air inside to expand, and if the air pocket isn't...

Shaft or Chain... that's the question...

I have put 5.8 gallons in the tank of my 82 1100E once. I distinctly remember it because it was half a mile up a slight incline to get to the f####ng pump from where it ran out, and a dozen or so H-D's passed me laughing and waving while I was pushing. Because of the way the tank and the filler...

    Anyone have a gas preference?

IMO the problems that some people see from using the no name off brands are because of contamination in that one station's tanks. I have no loyalty to any particular brand. I use Speedway almost exclusively because with the Speedy Rewards card I rack up enough points to get a $100 cash card...

    Brake bleeding help

I had a bear of a time getting the last bubble out of the mc on my 80 750E. I finally ended up taking my Mityvac and putting the narrow tip on the end, sticking that down in the hole at the bottom of the mc, and sucking out the bubble that was stuck in the corner there. I had to jiggle the brake...

'Chemicals and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

PB Blaster - Best stuff I've found for removing stubborn fasteners Evapo Rust - If you haven't tried it, do so. I keep a small jar handy with about an inch it; drop a rusty bolt in for a couple of days and the rust is all gone. Epoxy - any epoxy is going to work well, and have plenty of...

JB weld - stable in gas?

All epoxies are impervious to gasoline. JB Weld, and Quicksteel are both epoxies. The biggest cause of failure in using any adhesive is poor surface preparation. The second biggest cause is probably poor joint design. The broken post is an example of a butt joint, which is the worst case...

    Trouble getting cylinder block loose

Use the rubber mallet and give the block a few good hits. Lightly tapping probably isn't going to do it. Just don't hit the fins at an angle and you should be OK. The method I chose to repair the fins was to find a used block without broken fins.

Bill Cosby answered this back in the 60's. There's air so we can blow up basketballs.

    Open letter to the newbies...

I understand why some newbies don't use the search function to dig out the answer to their problems. If they're like me, the search show up 8-10 pages of threads, with each thread taking up 4-5 pages of posts, with 25% of the posts being some wiseass hijack of the thread topic (although I must...

Valve adjustment to tight or to loose?

I prefer to keep them at the wider end of the spec. In theory this will keep the valve cooler, since it will spend more timeresting against the valve seat where it can transfer the heat to the head. Probably splitting hairs on this, but that's my dad's theory, and he's a better mechanical...

    shim bucket problem

My dad had a bucket that wouldn't rotate on his 2001 GS500E. It ended up busting a valve on cold morning. I believe he got around it by swapping buckets around in the head to find a combination whose tolerances allowed free movement of all the buckets.

    Dead, something electrical....

Glad to hear it was an easy fix. I almost always overanalyze problems, but then I usually have to wait a couple of days to start working on them. Once I start working though, I try to stick to the advise my dad gave me about working on cars; start with the cheapest thing to fix and go from...

    Best adhesive?

FYI, the Devcon, JB-Weld, and the plastic weld are all epoxies. If you find one with a static mixer (the tip that mixes the two parts), try to get one that has more than one nozzle, since those are only good for one use.

    Best adhesive?

My preference for this type of repair is an epoxy. Cut a piece of screen to bridge the area around the crack. Drill a small hole at the end(s) of the crack. Lay down a layer of adhesive, then work some into the screen. Place the screen over the area, and put some more adhesive over top of it.

    Will a Fairing for '82-'83 GS1100E fit '80-'81 Models?

I have a Vetter Quicksilver that was on my 1980 GS750E, which has the same mounts as the 80-81 GS1100E. I can try to get a couple of pictures tonight for you to use as a comparison. I thought the Quicksilver was an excellent choice for a frame-mounted fairing on the 750. Not quite the same...

    repairing cracked side covers

The special filler is baking soda. Try some with any super glue type of product. I repaired the tabs on my sidecovers using superglue and baking soda. It works really well, and lasted about twenty years before I noticed any degradation of the bond. Cyanoacrylates are great adhesives, but they do...
