A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anything else to do when replacing the oil pan?

Agreed - check the strainer. Mine looked like: The dark areas are varnish-like stuff - had to use a needle to get rid of it (quite a few hole in such a strainer :?) BR Stig

    front cam chain tensioner

I don't have any other suggestions than already stated. But I hope a few pictures of my GS550 '77, could help you. The construction is fairly simple: and a photo of "3" and "4": and with the chainguide inserted: Since I obviously have the head and cylinders off rigth now, let me know if You...

Where do you purchase multicolored wire?

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php in U.K. has almost anything you could ask for, but with transportation, taxes it may be too expensive. BR Stig

    Numeric gear indicator

Hi, You are rigth - it is a Toshiba "something" driver circuit with a 7-segment display. The driver circuit is connected with 7 wires to a switch assembly, which will connect one of the wires to 0V, dependent of the selected gear (including neutral). On 5 gear models - i think it is the same...

    headlight switched??

Did the same, but in addition I put in a relay, shutting off light when start button is activated, to ensure full juice for start motor. BR Stig

Which way does the triangle go?

I used to have a similar problem, when driving at higher speeds (using more fuel). Thought it was caused by kinks at the fuelline giving trouble when the static fuelpressure dropped (the tank was getting more empty). Look for kinks and/or a clogged in-line filter. regards Stig

    Torque Wrench Advice

Are you questioning the accuracy of my wifes kitchenscale ?:-D My best guess would be: Replace Kg with lbs Replace m with feet Skip gravity - and you will end up with ft-lbs (But I might be corrected by some native non-metric:? ) Stig

    Torque Wrench Advice

Torquewrenches have (at least) two different kind of errors: Missing repeatability and/or missing calibration. With missing repatability throw it away, but it is fairly easy to recalibrate a torquewrench. (I have made a Low-tech presentation at...

    going through the wiring harness

It is quite common, that the 3rd phase from the stator is disconnected until the headlight is turned on. If you follow the wire, it will end at a set of contacts, operated together with the ligthswitch. The reason for this, is to take some of the load from the regulator in daylight, and you...

    painted Carbs

The high temp paint I have used, hardens up with high temperature which you hopefully:shock: wont get at the carbs (unless you bake them in an oven). Just a hint - don?t know the type of your paint. Stig

    Rewire

I did a complete rewiring of my 77' GS550. First of all because POs had made "repairs" like shortcutting the only fuse in the system, but most off all because i wanted to improve the system like adding a master relay, permanent light (mandatory in Denmark) and a fusebox. I used cables with...

    Valve Shim change

Shims usually comes with 0.05mm gap to next size. So it doesn't matter if you read 0.00 or 0.025mm. With next size you will have between 0.050 and 0.075mm - all within the specified range. After shifting the shim, you take a new masurement - and then you will now what the gap was before...

Dying when hot, broke down on highway... 3 times... in a row...

I would go for the filter and/or fuelline problem too. I had a similar problem last year. The bike was running o.k. until I reached the highway - then after a few Km it lost power, and I had to pull over. Problem was a bent fuelline, being able to deliver fuel a low speed, but at the highway the...

    Front brake/brake light trouble

I recently replaced the brakeswitch at the handle, with an european alternative to the K+S hydraulic switch. I works perfect - I placed it at the "T" splitting the brakelines to the two frontcalipers. By doing so, I even got rid of a cable at the handlebar. The banjo pitch for GS is M10x1.0...

    Front Wheel Off-Center?

Are you sure that wheel and fork are stock for this year ? I replaced the fork at my 77' GS550 to a 81' model fork, and due to a sligthly different construction, the total of spacers were 20mm to wide. I had to cut the 20mm from the right side spacer, to make the wheel fit and be centered. Had a...

    Banjo bolts - again ?

What bothered me, was several statements at dealers homepages like: "10x1.25 for most Japanese bikes". But it seems that "most" means any bike but Suzuki. I had to be sure before i ordered a hydraulic brake switch, and I hated to disassemble the brakes, when they were working great. Did it...

    Banjo bolts - again ?

Hi could anyone tell (for sure) the threadpitch for the frontbrake banjo bolts at my 77' GS550. I have searched the forum for similar answers, but it seems that both 10x1.0 and 10x1.25 are mentioned. thanks Stig

    Gear Position Indicator Lights

It is pretty easy to check the if the problem is the display, or the contact at the gearlever. Somewhere below the tank, you will find a 6 point connector and a single blue wire. As i recall, your bike has 5 gear + neutral, which means that you will probably find only 5 pins in the connector...
