A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Valve Stem Seals, or maybe throw in the towel

No worries, glad I could help clarify! Not to worry about never this before, compression test is easy to do. There are tons of threads discussing the do's and don'ts of a compression test. Everyone starts somewhere. I'm fairly experienced with engines but there are plenty of things I've never...

Valve Stem Seals, or maybe throw in the towel

I think there might be some confusion here. The compression tester shouldn't be connected to the vacuum port on the intake. It is threaded into the spark plug hole. I believe most compression testers come with a few adapters for most standard plug thread sizes, 14mm 12mm and maybe 10mm. My 850...

Valve Stem Seals, or maybe throw in the towel

I agree with the others. Throw some fresh new plugs in and ride. Monitor oil consumption over a 1,000 mile period if you can. I wouldn't tear it down until you have an exact figure that warrants it. The plugs on my 850 look similar to yours, although not quite as bad. But I don't know how many...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

If you look closely at my pictures, you'll notice my bike does not have the original L handlebars. I'm not sure what they are or what they came from since they were on the bike when I purchased it. But they are the same shape as the bars on the 81 GS850G I used to have, only they're not as tall...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

Today I ordered all the parts to rebuild the calipers. Hopefully they arrive within a few business days so I can get started on them. I'm limited on time over the next few months so I may just rebuild the sticking caliper to get me through the season, then rebuild the other 2 this winter. We've...

'83 850GL Maintenance and other repairs

Got the 850 out last week for a ride in the cool evening. Was heading over to Holly MI, about 30 miles from where I live, to meet a buddy for dinner. While on my way, taking the scenic back roads, the bike felt weird. Kind of underpowered or sluggish, but was running fine. At a stop light I...

Good places to tap into to get power but only when the bike runs

I second keyed power if at all possible. I tapped into the brown wire in the headlamp bucket for my phone charger/volt meter. My heated grips have thick gauge wiring intended to be wired directly to the battery. The controller has an auto shutoff feature that I disabled because it leaves the...

    1982 GS1100E - My First (Project) Bike

A little snap crackle and pop on deceleration is normal for a carburetored machine, usually more noticeable the higher the RPMs are. I personally love it and wouldn't try to rid myself of the symphony. It can become obnoxious depending on how loud your exhaust is and how you ride, so I try to be...

    Price of small parts...

I understand the economics and the reason for the prices. However I still thanks it's crazy.

    Price of small parts...

I need to rebuild my calipers. All I need are the seals and boots. I find it borderline criminal what they charge for the rubber "boot" that goes over the slide pins, $10 each. I think OEM rubber parts are outrageously over priced.

When do you expect ev bikes to become practical road bikes.

I will say, I think for a lot of people an EV bike is more practical than an EV car/truck. A lot of folks just use their bike for commuting and/or weekend rides to the bar or car show or just for a stroll. If you don't ride very far and come home every day you can get by on quite a few of the...

    Running bad... Plug Oil?Fouled? ?

Hey Redman, sorry to hear about the continued issues with the GK. Any idea how many miles on the plugs? That might give you an indication of how long it took to foul the plug if it's from oil consumption. Although if it's black and wet, that sounds like fuel fouled as others mentioned. Ron...

    1982 gs1100l

It's very hard to determine what % is the various lubes available. I went down this rabbit hole about 4yrs ago. From what I could find, the Honda moly lube no longer has the high % that we desire. Really the only info I could find that proved this was on forums, so take that into...

Shims ... What's the Most Common from the Factory

Wow that's a good deal! Do any modern suzukis use the same shims that our GSs do? I'm surprised the dealer even had the shims.

Major part of what I like about my GS. (GK actually)

Thanks for the story and thanks for the reminder, Redman! I need to lube my cables as well, my clutch cable has started feeling kind of stiff/notchy. Might be getting near time for a new cable for my 850 too...
