DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

New member... Not so new rider from Southern New Jersey

I did some digging. The part number seems to be the same (except color codes) for '79-81 GS850G and '80-81 GS1000G.

Was the '79 tank different? I thought it was the same as the '80-81.

    1980 gs850 g. Vibration in stator cover

Pulling the flywheel isn't horrible if you have the tool, especially when the cover is already off. Once you have the tool, you can disassemble your starter clutch and make sure everything is kosher. While you're waiting, you might pull the starter motor and inspect it for signs of wear. Either...

    1980 gs850 g. Vibration in stator cover

I agree, something with the starter clutch seems most likely. If the starter motor by itself can excite the same buzz, then maybe something else is resonating. You'll know more when you get the rotor pulled.

    1981 GS850GL Rebuild

You're certainly not hesitant to tear into a thing, are you? Keep up the good work, that's a nice example.

Airbox, rubber piece on the inside covers?

Not the entire top of the filter cage, but the entire perimeter of the filter cage. And yes, you should be able to find weather strip that works in both places. I think I used 1/4" closed cell foam.

    GS1100GK getting a mild teardown

The TruckLite gen 7 lamp isn't all gimmicky-looking like the H-D lightJWSpeaker, etc. It looks just fine on a vintage bike, IMHO. But not stock. It looks more like a hole than a vintage lamp. The vintage lamp has all the little pillow lenses that none of the LED lamps have. Personally, the...

    Damn the leaves!

That sounds like it totally sucks. Sorry to hear it. I sometimes wonder about taking judo lessons to learn how to fall down better, but experience tells me there isn't time to take any action. Maybe I could volunteer to just let students try to throw me. That might be kinda funny anyway. So...

You're having too much fun for a work trip.

    RAM Tough-Claw X-grip

Well, I ran up to Iron Pony today where they have a counter devoted to RAM equipment. They say they've had about half a dozen of the X-Grip Claws returned with quality issues. I ended up taking Brian's suggestion for the "Quick-Grip" phone holder. with the "Torque" mount and the short socket, I...

Sad news. So many great riders lost from that family.

    engine knocking

"Somewhere as high as the plugs" could be cam end walk, but it seems odd that it would go away as the bike warms up. I have a loose baffle in my RH muffler. It only rattles once the engine has warmed up. In fact, I've lately been taking that as my cue to shove the choke in, because it's ready...

    RAM Tough-Claw X-grip

Yep. Too many errands to run. Thanks for the tip. I'll look that up and see what combination of bits I need to mount the thing. Maybe check to see if my phone fits too.

    RAM Tough-Claw X-grip

I had the opportunity, so I took it back to Cycle Gear to return it. They looked at it and basically said, "that ain't right." I think I'm just the lucky one who had a quality issue with a normally solid product. Their shelves are strangely bare of RAM products right now, so they couldn't...

    1980 GS 850 GL restoration

It's just so gratifying to get a neglected piece of equipment into working order again, isn't it? Especially a motorcycle, and I have particle feelings about that model specifically, having had a similar experience.

    First time for EVERYTHING

Plan another $1000 or more getting it roadworthy, reliable and safe. Things like rebuilding brakes and a million other little things, plus the mechanical problems that may be hidden right now. That would be the case for any old bike that needs work. Maybe more for other brands. If you're just...

    RAM Tough-Claw X-grip

nononono... The movement is not in the ball joint. That's nice and stiff. The connection between the ball's base and the claw is where it's loose, and should behave like a monolithic unit.

    RAM Tough-Claw X-grip

More of a question than a review. This is my first RAM product, so I'm not sure what to expect here. It grips my phone fine, it grips the handlebar fine. But it still wobbles. The attachment of the ball to the claw is not rigid, and allows the X-Grip and phone to move 3-4 mm. There doesn't seem...

Steering stem lower bottom bearing outer race remove removal

In my mind, the primary value of the bearing driver is that it helps you to drive them in straight. The races are harder than most any hammer's face, so I don't think that's an issue unless you're doing something else so wrong that chipping the race isn't a problem anymore. Just use light taps...
