A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Stuffing an 850 in a 650.

There was a bloke on here who claimed he'd managed to shove a 750 lump in to a 550 frame without cutting things. Might have been BS but I seem to remember he posted a photo. The shaft drive set up would probably add some other issues as well as the size difference.

    Mikuni carbs

The GS750 has different needle jets and jet needles to the GS1000 as well as mains and pilots plus some had different slide cutaways, depending on year.

    Mikuni carbs

The carbs have the same spacing so will fit. However, the jetting (and slide cutaway) is different and you'll possibly have a job dialling them in for your bike. There are plenty of used 750 carbs around anyway. A lot of bikes share the same disc pads - calipers being made by Tokico (spelling?)...

How do I remove the trip reset knob?

Some models have a tiny screw in the centre of the knob which needs to come out first, others don't. If the screw isn't there or has been removed they just pull off.

    Has anybody used Marving mufflers?

They won't add or lose any power and the noise is the same (or very similar - I never noticed a difference) to stock. They are a bit lighter and the chrome is fine. Decent, if spendy, option if you want to keep the 4 in to 2.

fuel tap and leaky something issue

Now you've got the carbs out you might as well pull the float bowls off and check they're not full of crud. Plus are the rubbers inlet and outlet hoses soft? If they've hardened you'll struggle to reseal the carbs and they need to be 100% airtight. Link to CMSNL for the correct tap...

fuel tap and leaky something issue

To get the carbs off undo the airbox mountings to the frame then undo the clamps on the front and rear of the carbs. Push the airbox back as far as you can and wiggle the carbs out to the RH (brake lever) side - they're a tight fit in there and if your hoses are hard it makes things tougher...

    1978 GS750E Rich Carb

Definitely check out the fuel vacuum hose plus could also be the wrong jet needles / needles in wrong position. I've seen several 750s fitted with 850 needles / set up and they run rich.

Help, help help the engine revs with the throttle closed

Either a sticking cable, sticking slides or somethings jamming in the throttle arm at the carb end.

    Fork Tubes

Pitted forks should be hard chromed. Specialist job but I should imagine you can get it done in the US at least as easily as we can here. Costs about ?150 the pair in the UK. There are aftermarket legs out there and of decent quality but they ain't cheap (more than getting yours refurbished...

    1980 GS750ET stock petcock question

Prime has the slot at 12:30 and 'not prime' is at 3:15 (if you imagine the hands of a clock). Your photo shows it on prime. you can turn it both ways, clockwise or anti-clockwise - it makes no difference to function.

Carbon Buildup at Idle, Erratic Behavior up to 1/4 Throttle

Yep, that's the circuit you're riding on at 1/4 throttle.

Question about LED in 78 GS550

The rear light doesn't need anything else plumbing in - the indicators only need that because they flash. There are different standards of led bulbs - some are way to bright, some are just fine and some are a bit dim.

    GS550 Engines differences

You can swap cylinder heads - they bolt straight on. So you could run with VM carbs on a 79 head fitted to a 1980 bottom end.

    GS550 Engines differences

No they won't - different diameter.

    GS550 Engine rattle

Very likely you've bent a valve or 2. It'll show up when you check the valve clearances if you have. Give me a shout if you need some - I'm pretty sure I've got some in the garage.

    Hot Start Problem

If the battery checks out I'd suggest looking at the starter motor bushes and armature. Symptoms are classic for those being worn or dirty.

    cracked overflow float bowl pipe

If you can't find the right size tube, or you're just tight like me, you can solder the crack. If you do, make sure you don't block the tube with solder.
